Home for a While
https://amzn.to/4u0AkWc
Home for a While is one of those rare foster care books that actually understands the assignment. It does not rush to a fairy tale ending. It does not pretend uncertainty is easy. Instead, it gently walks through what it feels like to land in a new home that is temporary, even when everyone is trying their best.

The story follows a child adjusting to foster care with all the mixed emotions that come with it. There is confusion. There is worry. There is the quiet fear of getting attached. What makes this book so strong is that it validates those feelings without making the foster family the heroes of the story. The focus stays on the child’s experience. The title says it all. Sometimes a home is for a while. And that does not make it meaningless.

For foster parents, this book is a gift. It opens up conversations about temporary care in a way that is honest but not heavy. It helps children understand that it is okay to care about people even if the future is uncertain. It also reassures kids that adults are working on a plan, even if that plan is not fully clear yet. Home for a While creates space for belonging without promises that cannot be kept. And that kind of truthful reassurance is exactly what many children in care need most.
