Five Mile Creek Schoolhouse

Five Mile Creek Schoolhouse Welcome to the historic, community-owned Five Mile Creek School House on M-119 in Harbor Springs, MI. Soon the monthly "schoolhouse dinners" began.

The Five Mile Creek Schoolhouse, located west of Harbor Springs on M-119 near Five Mile Creek Road, operated as a one-room school from 1915-1952. Over the years many different teachers educated a small group of students, fired the wood furnace, and cooked a hot lunch. After this small school district voted to annex to Harbor Springs, its doors remained closed only a short period of time. The Five

Mile Creek Community Association paid one dollar for the building and wrote its first constitution in 1954. Word has it that the "mayor" of Five Mile Creek, Jim Smith, wanted a place to play ping pong! In addition, the dinners brought a small community, centered along Five Mile Creek and the shore, together once a month for a potluck meal and the friendship of rural neighbors. Today the schoolhouse dinners continue on the first Saturday of every month at 6:15pm. Association members who reside in the old school district and friends of the schoolhouse from near and far bring a dish to pass and their own table service. Coffee and water are provided by the hosts of the month and there may be a program of interest to the members. More often there is a great meal to be enjoyed and a chance to catch up with friends and neighbors. Annual membership dues help with expenses.

Winter Solstice Walk - Dec. 21, 2025
This week, we arrive at the Winter Solstice which marks the longest night of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. We are excited to partner again with our friends at the Little Traverse Conservancy for a Winter Solstice Lantern Walk Sunday, December 21, 2025, from 5-6 pm.
Meet at the School House for soup donated by Grain Train and bread donated by Crooked Tree Breadworks and then follow the lanterns to explore the adjacent Seberon “Boo” Litzenburger Nature Preserve. This is a family-friendly event for all ages. Not comfortable walking through the woods? Enjoy the warmth and history of the old schoolhouse along M-119 just past Pond Hill Farm. This event is free and open to the public and registration is required.

To learn more and register, call the Little Traverse Conservancy at 231.347.0991, or register here:

Saturday is the monthly potluck supper at the schoolhouse. If I remember correctly, October is the monthly potluck supper when there is also an auction to raise funds. This is always great fun! Plan on bringing plenty of cash, as well as homemade jams, sauces, breads, and other goodies to be auctioned! Come at 6:15 with a dish to share and your own place settings. The dinner bell rings at 6:30.
