Tomorrow’s meeting of the Hanson Historical Society will differ slightly from our standard format.

Following brief Society business and updates, representatives from the Hanson Public Library Building Committee will give a public informational presentation regarding the proposed new Hanson Public Library project, which is on the ballot for the Town Election on Saturday, May 16. A public Q&A session will follow.

The evening will conclude with a short documentary presentation related to America250.

As a charitable organization, the Hanson Historical Society does not endorse or oppose ballot questions, political parties, or candidates for office. This presentation is being hosted solely as a community informational forum in keeping with our educational and civic engagement mission.

Meeting begins at 7:00PM at District 7 Schoolhouse, 565 Main Street in South Hanson.

Hard to believe the 2026 season is just about here. We open our season on April 2 with a presentation from our very own Wes Blauss.

Our current seasonal calendar is included here. Any changes will be posted to our page.

Stop by and visit us! We would love to have new members join, and we are always looking for volunteers for events.

Lastly, for those not familiar, Schoolhouse #4, where we meet, is located at 565 Main Street in South Hanson, in front of and beside the old LZ Thomas School.

This scan of a Kodachrome 35mm slide, dated December 2, 1962, depicts two men, Art Merrill and John Stern. We get a nice view of Ocean Spray’s headquarters and Clark’s Market at South Hanson Depot.

What do you remember about the days of a livelier South Hanson?

I can't get the exact then & now as I am unable to replicate the angle in Google Maps, but here is a view from ~1932 and 2012 (Google Maps) showing the corner of High and Holmes Streets, particularly the Cobb House, which, depending on sources, places construction at either at 1850 or 1880.

Do you have any old photos or postcards of your house in Hanson?

Friend and member of the Society, Marcus Linn, posted this and I wanted to share with you all

“Well it took a few years and battles at town meetings but here’s the status of the mill in the last couple of years we replaced the roof upgraded the electrical replaced the wheel sluice way and add additional railings also we added new tables and chairs just this week. The Thomas Mill Committee is working hard to keep the mill relevant and updated without taking away to much of the history”

Also the wheel itself is now working. Thank you to Marcus, the Thomas Mill Committee, and all others who helped with this project!

The Society held our members only potluck here to close out the season a few weeks ago and we were all very impressed! Such a great resource for the Town of Hanson.

Please join us this Thursday at 7pm for our September meeting and presentation.

As always, seating is limited and first come first serve.

Join us for a nostalgic look at the History of the Beer Can, along with a unique pop-up museum experience. Curator Kevin Logan will bring an impressive assortment of cans from the museum based in Southeastern Massachusetts, including novelty cans, tv and movie props, and more. In this family-friendly presentation you'll enjoy the history, art, and humor of beer cans with a special focus on local breweries. Trivia and door prizes are included! A Q&A will follow the presentation.

Kevin Logan is the Curator of the Beer Can Museum, located in East Taunton, Massachusetts. The museum is a unique collection of thousands of beer cans from more than 80 countries, and includes folk art, vintage cans from the early days of beer can production, classic beer advertising, and novelties. The museum has been featured in Travel & Leisure, Chronicle, radio programs and several travel books, including Massachusetts Curiosities (Globe Pequot Press) and Massachusetts Treasures (University of Massachusetts Press).
