From Kitchen Darkroom to Historical Legacy: The Photography of Thomas Drew

Don't miss this exclusive opportunity to celebrate a local pioneer with two special events this summer:

Friday, August 14th (1:00 PM-2:00 PM): Gain expert insight into Drew's captivating avocation with a lecture by historian Les Molyneaux at the Hanover Council on Aging (665 Center St, Hanover, MA 02339)

Saturday, August 15th (11:00 AM – 2:00 PM): Get an up-close look at the past during a special pop-up exhibit at the Stetson House Barn (514 Hanover Street), featuring Drew's original cameras, historic negatives, and rarely seen original photo albums.

Long before modern photography, South Hanover storekeeper Thomas Drew (1845–1913) was capturing the soul of Massachusetts' South Shore. Operating from his home on the banks of the Indian Head River, Drew transformed his kitchen into a darkroom and used a simple burlap tarp outside as his portrait studio. Today, his incredible collection of glass-plate negatives stands as a breathtaking time capsule of local family life, friendships, and historic landmarks.
