The Upper Valley Land Trust

The Upper Valley Land Trust The Upper Valley Land Trust helps people conserve land. https://uvlt.org We provide technical assistance and conservation solutions for landowners.

We engage people in the vision and process of land conservation and in the stewardship of conserved lands. UVLT provides conservation leadership, tools and expertise to permanently protect the working farms, forests, wildlife habitat, water resources, trails and scenic landscapes that surround residential areas and commercial centers and make the Upper Valley a truly special place to live. Our con

servation projects secure the mixture of land uses that are so critical to the region’s vitality and identity. We work with local conservation commissions and volunteer groups to identify and prioritize land conservation opportunities. We steward permanent agreements that conserve key properties forever. UVLT focuses its land conservation activities in 45 Vermont and New Hampshire towns in the Upper Connecticut River Valley. These include Bradford, Cavendish, Chelsea, Corinth, Fairlee, Hartford, Hartland, Newbury, Norwich, Pomfret, Reading, Royalton, Ryegate, Sharon, Springfield, Strafford, Thetford, Topsham, Tunbridge, Vershire, Weathersfield, West Fairlee, West Windsor, Windsor, and Woodstock in VT, and Bath, Canaan, Charlestown, Claremont, Cornish, Croydon, Dorchester, Enfield, Grafton, Grantham, Hanover, Haverhill, Lebanon, Lyme, Newport, Orange, Orford, Piermont, Plainfield, and Unity in NH.

☀️Happy ! ☀️

This week Holly Henderson, UVLT Naturalist and Outdoor Programs Leader, visited My Walden Conservation Area in Sharon, VT to look for some signs that mark the beginning of summer. As Holly explored this UVLT conserved property, she used the app 'iNaturalist' 📸 to help identify and log the flora and fauna she spotted on her walk.

UVLT maintains a project page on iNaturalist where users can tag their observations from any UVLT Conservation Area which is automatically added to the project data🌱. By collecting data on our properties and uploading your observations to iNaturalist, you can help us to learn more about our properties so we can steward them well!

To join our project on iNaturalist, search 'Upper Valley Land Trust Conservation Areas' and click on 'Join'!

Happy ! 🌾

This week we wanted to celebrate American Wetlands Month by resharing a video Cassie took back in 2024 to talk about bogs, one of the four types of wetlands! Bear Pond Natural Area is one of UVLT's many conserved areas with vital wetland communities. What separates bogs from other types of wetlands, that they are among the most acidic of peatlands, and receive very little surface water flow. They are dominated by shrubs such as leatherleaf and bog laurel 🌸

When walking along the peat mat that makes up this bog, you may experience trembling underfoot as it floats, this is how it received the term 'quaking bog'. The quaking bog at Bear Pond harbors a number of rare plant species and is rated by New Hampshire's Natural Heritage Inventory Program as 'one of the best bogs in the state'.

What a great way to spend the last weekend of May by celebrating your local wetland, whether it be a bog, swamp, marsh, or fen! 🥳

🐦Happy !

This week Holly Henderson, UVLT Naturalist and Outdoor Programs Leader, was out at Paradise Park in Windsor, VT to scout out some of the habitats for UVLT's bird walk this weekend. The land surrounding Lake Runnemede has a conservation easement held by UVLT and is one of the best places to bird in the Upper Valley!

As Holly explored the various habitats of the park, she shares what types of birds are there right now, whether they are just visiting briefly or long-term residents. 🐦🪿

If you'd like to explore Paradise Park with Holly and see a wide variety of bird species that these habitats support, you can join us THIS Saturday, May 23rd at 7:00AM for an educational bird walk!

For more information and to register, visit uvlt.org/events.

In an era when the number of small family farms has plummeted, the recently reestablished Brookvale Farm in Strafford, VT, stands out in many ways. It’s a hopeful sign and an authentic team effort made possible by family, friends, neighbors, and individuals across the region, united in their support of local agriculture. https://uvlt.org/2026/05/brookvale-farm-a-heritage-connecting-generations/

Happy !🫐🍓

This week Cassie Bernyk, Stewardship Programs Coordinator, headed out to our Brookmead Food Pantry Garden in Norwich, VT to get a couple of garden beds prepped and ready for some planting this Saturday. We will be picking up a variety of berry bushes 🍓 and fruit trees 🍎from a local plant sale this weekend, then heading right to the garden to get everything in the ground. This is the first time we'll have berries in the food pantry garden, so we're very excited to add this to the list of food we're able to grow and donate to our friends at Willing Hands !

While at the garden, Cassie noticed that a few plants have already taken advantage of the Spring weather and are growing strong 🌱. In just a few weeks our rhubarb plants and asparagus will be ready to start harvesting and be donated to local hunger relief programs.

If you're interested in getting involved with UVLT's food pantry garden program this season, you can sign up on our website www.uvlt.org/get-involved/volunteer

This Friday we're celebrating something truly special. 🎉Today marks the 300th installment of Field Notes Friday that UVLT staff has put out! This project was created back in 2020, during the early months of the COVID pandemic, so we could keep you connected to the outdoors while we had to stay inside. Over the last 6 years the Field Notes community has grown tremendously, and it's often something many of you look forward to every week. We are so grateful for what Field Notes has turned into and appreciate you coming along on the journey! 💚

Throughout the years, many UVLT staff members have shared nature nuggets, various stewardship and conservation projects, and beautiful views of conserved land; we are excited to keep it going!

Thank you to those we have been with us since the beginning, and thank you to those who joined us at various stages of this journey! You help us keep this project going and we are so grateful for all of your kind words and support over the last 6 years 💚
