Three reentrants earned their lead abatement certification through a partnership with A New Tomorrow, which is a requirement for working in houses built before 1978. Two of them already secured employment through a local contractor thanks to A New Tomorrow’s workforce program!

A New Tomorrow is a reentry organization based in Harrisburg that supports reentrants along their journey. The organization paid for the certification of all three reentrants.

Philadelphia voters have a rare opportunity to bring much-needed transparency and accountability to the city’s jails in the May 20 primary election. A pivotal ballot measure proposes the creation of a new prison oversight board and office, with the power to investigate problems and hold city officials accountable.

Join us for the kickoff of Eastern State Penitentiary’s Wednesday Nights series to learn more. The opening event features our own Noah Barth in a panel discussion focused on this critical ballot measure and what it means for the future of prison oversight in Philadelphia. Nine incarcerated hospice volunteers completed the 40-hour training required to assist in the end-of-life care of inmates in need.

The hospice program at SCI Waymart is not new but has been updated recently. This hospice program is designed to create a caring relationship between the inmate volunteer and the inmate patient, with a goal to provide the dying inmate comfort, dignity, and quality of life to those who are facing a terminal illness and are no longer seeking curative treatment. It focuses on supporting the inmate patient—physically, emotionally, and spiritually—through the end-of-life process.

This was the first of several classes at SCI Waymart as the facility has several inmates interested in volunteering for this program.
