We celebrate the conclusion of another season of collaboration with the plein air painters (those who paint outside) of the Hanover Area Arts Guild.

When we recognize each of our monthly winners throughout the growing season as our "Garden of the Month," the plein air artists visit the winning home, each one picking an interesting aspect that catches their eye, and creates their vision with pastels, oils, watercolors, and acrylics. It's fascinating to see where each artist focuses, and it gives our winners yet another recognition of the beauty of their hard work.

Here you see some of the artists in action. Each October, they have their own exhibit at the Hanover Area Arts Guild on Carlisle St. Some of the lovely results of their efforts from this year's exhibit are shown below. If you would like to see the artwork in person, the exhibit runs until Oct. 31.

The Hanover Garden Club traveled to Strawberry Hill Nature Center in Fairfield. It was just a perfect day. We enjoyed a lovely hike led by Alba, one of the naturalist at the center. Besides all the colorful foliage we were able to see so many different types of 🍄! It was all beautiful!
We had worked up an appetite after our hike, so we ventured into Gettysburg to enjoy a leisurely lunch at Upper Crust.Yum Yum!

Reminder about October 20th meeting.

Trick or Treat? The meeting this month will be a real treat.

Empty pill bottles with ALL LABELS REMOVED.
Pop-top lids
Your calendars! We will be signing up to work at the Greens Sale and to bring refreshments to keep us energized while we are working!
Also, a special request from the Greens Committee. Please bring the following to the meeting:
A kitchen apron
A wooden spoon
Green Hanover Garden Club Apron
Garden Clippers

Congratulations to our October "Garden of the Month" award winners, Dave and Theresa Henry of 4 Dart Manor Court.

They first purchased this property four years ago as an empty lot--a blank slate inviting them to dig in! After building the house, they had to prep the grounds with better soil and drainage, and then all systems go!

Theresa is the ideas person, and Dave does the grunt work...a pairing that works out perfectly. As he said, "She tells me what to do, and I do it!" A gardener's wish come true!

Theresa grew up on a farm, and that influence always stayed with her. When her father retired, he worked for a local garden store in Hanover. When it closed, he said she should start a garden store because she was artsy and loved decorating. Acting on that advice, she took the leap, learned about plants, and ran Henry's Garden and Gifts for many years, closing in 2001.

All that she learned there she carried over into designing the garden areas in this home, and they both worked to make their ideas come alive. They continue to update and add interest to their landscape with each passing season and year, loving where they live and the natural beauty surrounding them.

Thank you, Dave and Theresa, for beautifying your corner of the neighborhood for all to enjoy!

ART GUILD EXHIBIT !!! Now until Halloween!

Last year and this year, our Community Gardens Recognition Committee collaborated with the plein air painters from the Hanover Area Arts Guild.
Plein air painters are ones that paint outdoors, and several of their painters have come to our winner’s garden each month to paint.

Hours are different this year than last.

During the Second Saturday event on Saturday, Oct. 10, some of the artists will be there, along with free food, from 12:00 to 5:00. It is a great time to ask questions and discuss what you see. Most items are for purchase as well.
The show runs from Oct. 6 to Oct. 31. The Hanover Area Arts Guild is open
each week from Tuesday to Saturday. The hours are 12:00 to 5:00.

Please support them by visiting the exhibit and seeing all the beauty they have created, not only from our winners’ gardens but from all of the other areas where they paint.

Rain? What rain?

Members of the Hanover Garden Club had a wonderful time on our trip to Lancaster County. Though we had a few drops at first, Mother Nature came through and shut it down, giving us an opportunity to have so much fun visiting the Stoltzfus Gourd & Pumpkin Farm and Root's Market in Manheim, PA.

It was a feast for all of the senses. The brilliant colors, foods, pumpkins, flowers and more provided so much to desire, we ran out of room to bring it all home!

How lucky are we to live in an area that can showcase all of nature's gifts in such a magnificent way? This visit reminded us once again how important it is to cherish and protect the land that provides us with such wonder. For that, we are grateful.

Our first meeting of the year was spectacular! Seeing everyone’s smiling faces and meeting our four new members was awesome! We also had one guest stop by, remember if you don’t know about joining and just want to check one of our meetings out, you are more than welcome to do so. We had a blast creating new arrangements to take home. Thank you always to our photographer Bobby Lillis, and everyone who helped out to make this meeting enjoyable.

Congratulations to our September "Garden of the Month" winner, Jim Matthews, of 199 Primrose Lane.

Jim's gardening journey started at a very young age. He lived beside his grandmother for his first seven years, and he has been told that every time she was out in her garden, he was out there with her! His three aunts also had big gardens and flowers, and one continued to garden through her 90's! It's clearly in the blood.

Two of his sisters love to garden as well, but he didn't "get into it" like they did until he purchased his current house about 20 years ago. There wasn't much there besides a line of trees on the side of his property, so he started with a shade garden. As time passed, the trees came down and houses were built, forcing him to transition from a shade garden to one for full sun. He revamped everything.

As a kid, he always loved to watch plants grow up through the ground, and that love renews itself when the seeds he plants germinate and his perennials come to life each spring. They are the mainstay of his gardens, with annuals adding pops of color.

Part of his garden is planted with spring vegetables which transition to tomato plants...sixteen varieties!...with Jim always looking to add new ones every year. He generously shares the bounty with passersby--look for the chair!

He not only feeds people. His gardens are certified as a Monarch Waystation, serving to sustain monarch butterflies as they travel through North America. No wonder they like to stop here--his milkweed plants are massive! All types of insects and birds are constantly flitting, buzzing and chowing down in this on-going garden party.

For our program following the meeting, we will be making beautiful flower arrangements to share with one another.

Please bring:

- A vase or container with your name written on the bottom on a piece of tape.
- Flowers and greens from your garden to share with the club.

If you don’t have a container, don’t worry! We will have some extra containers available.

If you would like to contribute non-perishable food items to the Council of Churches, we will have a collection box available at the meeting. Any donations would be greatly appreciated.

We hope you can join us and are looking forward to seeing everyone! Here’s to a wonderful new Garden Club year.
