From Jaycee Kid to Chapter President
Meet the Member: Gracie Backes, Jefferson City Jaycees
Gracie Backes of Jefferson City has been a dedicated member of the Jaycees since 2019, though her connection to the organization began long before. Growing up as a “Jaycee kid,” she spent her early years attending events alongside her parents, where she witnessed firsthand the friendships, service, and sense of community the organization fosters. Those early experiences made joining the Jaycees a natural choice, allowing her to continue building meaningful connections while giving back to her community.

One of Gracie’s favorite projects is the annual Christmas parade in Jefferson City, an event she describes as a joyful tradition that brings the entire community together. However, her most meaningful Jaycee moment came when she was sworn in as the 2026 Chapter President by her father, who had once been one of the youngest individuals to hold that same role. The experience marked a powerful full-circle moment, highlighting both her family’s legacy and her own leadership journey.

Through her involvement in the Jaycees, Gracie has grown into a confident leader who isn’t afraid to push boundaries and encourage others to step outside of their comfort zones. Her passion for helping others extends beyond the organization—she shares that a fun part of her day sometimes includes dancing with her patients at work (who happen to be animals).
If given the chance to dine with a historical figure, Gracie would choose Steve Irwin, reflecting her love for animals and admiration for his work. Her go-to drink order is a simple Coke Zero with vanilla.

For Gracie, the Jaycees represent more than just an organization—they are family. Inspired by both her father’s leadership and her mother’s resilience, she continues to lead with determination and heart. To anyone considering joining, her advice is simple: take the step. The Jaycees offer endless opportunities for personal growth, community involvement, and lifelong connections.

A Legacy of Service: Celebrating Family at Wonderland Camp
This April, the Missouri Jaycees, Show-Me Core, and Mule Skinners gathered at Wonderland Camp for the 2026 Spring Work Weekend. While the mission was to build and repair, the spirit of the event perfectly captured the essence of National Family Day—reminding us that "family" isn't just who you’re related to, but the community you choose to serve with.

Continuing the Story
The heart of the work was the ongoing restoration of the long walking trail leading from the camp to the lake. Decades ago, the St. Louis Jaycees carved these paths out of the earth by hand. Today, a new generation of the Jaycee family stepped into those same footprints. With every shovel of dirt moved and every path cleared, we aren't just maintaining a walkway; we are honoring a multi-generational legacy of service.

Progress Through Partnership
The "family" extended beyond our members, as several partners stepped up to ensure the weekend's success:

Safety & Accessibility: The ramp project is now halfway complete, moving us closer to a safer, more accessible experience for all campers.

Generous Contributions: A huge thank you to That “Sew & So” Shed for the beautiful quilt donations and to the winner of the quilt raffle announced live on Facebook.

Fuel & Tools: The Jefferson City Jaycees kept the crew energized with sponsored meals, while a tool donation from ADT Tools provided the necessary gear to keep progress moving.

The Moments in Between
As with any family gathering, the best memories weren't just about the physical labor. They were found in the laughter shared over meals, the stories swapped after a long day of work, and a few spirited (and very competitive) rounds of Tic-Tac-Toe. 🌲🛠️

We left camp a little tired and plenty dirty, but with the pride that comes from building something meant to last.

Same time in the fall? Absolutely. 🍂

From Flea Markets to Lifelong Friendship: Miriam Wetter’s Jaycee Legacy 💚✨
Miriam Wetter’s journey with the St. Charles Jaycees began in 1980 with a simple invitation—and it turned into a lifetime of leadership and service!

From the early days of the Jaycee Women to managing "all the crap" (her words! 😂) at the Boone Center Flea Market housewares booth, Miriam has always been someone who "goes around and does stuff." Whether it was taking participants on State Fair field trips or working the 4th of July stands, she jumped in with both feet.

Highlights of a Heart for Service:

Finding Her Voice: Through the Jaycees, Miriam discovered a passion for public speaking, eventually advocating for the Alzheimer’s Association and the Cancer Society.

The Highest Honor: In 2006, she received her Senatorship—a humbling reflection of decades of dedication. 🏅

The Jaycee Mindset: Miriam often guided her life by asking, "What would a Jaycee do?" It was a space to build confidence and skills that lasted a lifetime.

Miriam’s Advice for the Next Generation:
🎤 Master public speaking.
✍️ Hone your writing skills.
🤝 Most importantly: Meet people and engage fully!

Miriam’s story reminds us that we are more than just projects—we are a community where people grow together. Thank you, Miriam, for your incredible legacy!

"The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others." — Mahatma Gandhi

Why this hits home today:
As we enter Mental Health Awareness Month, this quote takes on a special meaning. While we often focus on the impact service has on our communities, we sometimes forget how much it heals us. Connecting with others and contributing to something bigger than ourselves is a powerful way to boost our own well-being and find a sense of purpose.

This Sunday, remember that looking out for your neighbor and looking out for your own mental health go hand-in-hand. When we show up for each other, we build a world where everyone feels supported. 💚✨

Episode 10 🚀 (Final Episode)

We’re closing out our series with a look at the leader guiding the Missouri Jaycees forward — meet Sara Rothweiler, your 2026 Missouri Jaycees State President 💛💚

⚡️ THE QUICK FUN ROUND

☕ Coffee or Tea?
Definitely coffee… but hot tea is always welcome 🫖

🍩 Sweet or Salty?
No real choice — they go great together… but savory might win 😋

Night owl by nature, morning bird by habit 🌠🌅

🤔 Fun Fact:
Sara is an ambivert — sometimes she’s talkative and outgoing, other times she’s quiet and observant. A true balance of both worlds 🙃

🏆 THE JAYCEE JOURNEY

The “Why”: The camaraderie that comes after events — when the work is done and you see everything come together. That’s where the meaning really shows up. 🎉

Proudest Projects: Fence Painting at National Tom Sawyer Days 🎨 and Missouri Wonderland Camp 🏕 — both deeply rooted in service and connection.

Most Memorable Moment: Her first time volunteering at Access Day 🎡 — a moment that left a lasting impression on her Jaycee journey.

Jaycees in One Word: Possibilities ✨

Biggest Inspiration: Her grandma 💜 — who taught her the importance of leading with heart in every space she enters.

🗨️ CLOSING THOUGHTS
As we wrap up Meet the Member Monday, Sara reminds us that leadership isn’t about one moment — it’s about consistency, connection, and showing up. 💛💚

🧠 Small Acts, Big Impact: Mental Health Awareness Day
Today is May 1st, the start of Mental Health Awareness Month!

As Missouri Jaycees, we believe that "earth’s great treasure lies in human personality." But for that personality to shine, we have to prioritize our mental well-being. This year, the national theme is "More Good Days, Together," and that starts with us looking out for one another right here in our Missouri communities.

Being a leader isn’t just about chairing projects or networking—it’s about knowing when to step back, how to listen, and when to ask for help. Mental health is an essential part of the Individual Development we strive for every day.

💚 How to Participate Today:
Check In: Text one fellow Jaycee or friend just to see how their week is going.

Take 5: Whether you’re at home or in the office, take five minutes to step outside and breathe.

Share the Resources: If you or someone you know is struggling, you don't have to carry it alone. Reach out to local resources like NAMI Missouri or text 988 for immediate support.

👉 WE WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU!
What does a "good day" look like for you? Whether it’s a quiet cup of coffee, hitting a personal goal, or a great conversation with a friend, drop a comment below and share one thing that helps you find your balance. Let’s support each other in making every day a little brighter!

🌎 Lead the Change: Earth Day 2026
Today is April 22nd—Happy Earth Day!

The Jaycee Creed reminds us that "service to humanity is the best work of life." Today, that service extends to the very ground we stand on. From the rolling hills of the Ozarks to the banks of the Missouri River, our state is full of natural beauty that deserves our protection and care.

True leadership means leaving our communities better than we found them. Whether it's through a massive chapter project or a small personal shift, every action counts toward a sustainable future for Missouri.

🌱 How to Lead Today:
Clean Locally: Spend 15 minutes picking up litter in your neighborhood or a local park. Small acts prevent big problems in our waterways!

Support Missouri Growers: Visit a local farmers' market this weekend. Reducing "food miles" is a great way to lower your carbon footprint while supporting our local economy.

Reduce & Reuse: Challenge yourself to swap one single-use item today for a reusable alternative.

🎣 From Fishing Derbies to Lifelong Impact: Senator Wendy Cox! 💚
For this , we are thrilled to spotlight Wendy Cox of the West St. Louis County Jaycees!

Wendy’s Jaycee journey began in 1990 when a simple invite to a game night from Debbie Velten turned into a 17-year active career that shaped her life in ways she never expected. From her favorite memories at the Ballwin Days Fishing Derby to meeting her husband through the organization (she jokes that finding a spouse should be the "fifth pillar" of the Jaycees! 💍), Wendy’s story is all about the power of connection.

🌟 A Legacy of Growth
Wendy’s time as an active member helped her develop the leadership and planning skills that fueled her professional career as a teacher. Personally, the Jaycees taught her the art of balance and the importance of community—lessons she passed down by involving her children in Jaycee projects.

🎖️ The Highest Honor
In January 2012, Wendy was honored with her Senatorship. Being recognized by her home chapter was a deeply meaningful moment, marking her transition from an active leader to a lifelong servant of the community and the Jaycee Senate.

💡 Wendy’s Advice
"Take your ideas and bring them to life... being a Jaycee is about something bigger than yourself—it’s about joining a community that has the power to transform lives."

Today, Wendy continues to inspire us by embodying the spirit of service. Thank you, Wendy, for your dedication and for proving that once a Jaycee, always a Jaycee!
