Have you ever wondered what the Arch in front of our Administration Building is or why it’s part of the HLGU logo?
That arch tells a powerful story of faith, resilience, and renewal.
Founded in 1858 in LaGrange, Missouri, our institution moved to Hannibal, Missouri, in 1928 when the local community came together to establish a Baptist college and welcomed the LaGrange Male and Female Seminary to merge here. Their support helped shape what is now known as Hannibal-LaGrange University.
In 1989, the college experienced a devastating fire that destroyed the main building, which once housed offices, classrooms, the gymnasium, cafeteria, and chapel. After the debris was cleared, only one piece remained standing: the arched doorway.
Through God’s gracious provision and the faithful support of the Hannibal community and local churches, HLGU was able to rebuild. Today, the Burt Administration Building stands just steps from where the original building once stood, serving as a symbol of renewal and continued purpose.
The Arch remains as a lasting symbol of God’s faithfulness, the strength of community, and the renewal that continues to define Hannibal LaGrange University.
