We are saddened to share the passing of fellow Lions Club member, John Northcutt.

John was a dedicated member of our club and a true servant to the Hannibal community. We will fondly remember John for his dedication to our annual Pork BBQ, where he could always be found manning the grill with pride. It was just one of the many ways he showed his commitment to supporting the work of the Lions Club and serving others.

Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife, Regina, his children, and all who knew and loved him during this difficult time. He will be deeply missed. 💛🦁

Members of the Hannibal Lions Club recently welcomed Bill Dexheimer, who shared an update on the Fort Mason Historical Monument Project, an effort to preserve an important piece of our region’s early history.

Fort Mason was established in 1812 just below the Staverton Dam along the Mississippi River. Although the fort was only in operation for about a year, it played a strategic role during that time, serving as a place to store supplies, dock boats, and help control traffic along the Mississippi.

In 2024, organizers began soliciting donations and grants to bring the project to life. The Joe Bird Family generously donated the land for the monument, and the Riedel Foundation contributed a $6,000 grant. Many local businesses also stepped forward to donate materials, labor, and other support.

Thanks to the incredible generosity of the community, $44,000 was raised, allowing the monument project to be completed in late 2025. Today, a new Fort Mason Monument stands in the general location of the original site. The monument honors those who served and fought there while helping preserve this important chapter of local history for future generations.

Projects like this ensure that the stories and sacrifices that shaped our region are remembered for generations to come. The Lions Club appreciates Bill for sharing this meaningful update and for the community members who made the project possible.

If you would like to visit the monument in person, the address is 13970 Riverview Drive, New London, MO 63459.

We were honored to welcome Hannibal native Judge Mary Rhodes Russell, of the Supreme Court of Missouri, as the featured speaker at our recent program. Judge Russell shared valuable insight into the differences between Missouri’s state court system and the federal court system, helping attendees better understand how our judicial system works and the important role it plays in our daily lives.

A lifelong Missourian and respected leader in the legal community, Judge Russell has served on the Missouri Supreme Court since 2004 and made history as the Court’s first female Chief Justice from rural Missouri. Her distinguished career also includes service as a judge on the Missouri Court of Appeals and years of dedication to advancing legal education and civic understanding.

During her presentation, Judge Russell also introduced attendees to Missouri’s Judicial Discovery Center, a new public space featuring hands-on exhibits designed to explain how Missouri’s courts function and why civic responsibility matters. From landmark cases to the everyday work of judges and court staff, the center helps visitors see the judicial branch in a clear and approachable way.

Members of the Hannibal Lions Club recently welcomed Albert Kennett to speak about the mission and impact of Sarah’s Place, a ministry of First Christian Church Hannibal, FCC Hannibal, MO.

Sarah’s Place was inspired by the story of Sarah Roth, a Hannibal native and church member who bravely battled cancer for 13 years. During her fight, Sarah shared a heartfelt wish — that there could be a place where people nearing the end of life could spend their final days in a peaceful home-like setting, rather than in a hospital or in their own home where loved ones might carry difficult memories.

Although Sarah passed away in 2011 before such a place existed, her church honored her faith and compassion by creating Sarah’s Place. Today, the home provides a no-cost, comfortable setting for hospice patients and their families during end-of-life care. It also supports patients traveling to Hannibal for cancer treatments who need a place to stay while receiving care.

Stories of the families who have stayed there now fill a special memory book at the home, a touching reminder of Sarah’s legacy and the comfort the house continues to provide.

If you or someone you love may benefit from resources like Sarah’s Place, we encourage you to talk with your healthcare team about available support services in our community. 💙
