The Spirit of American Pie Lives On — Right Here
In the gentle fields of northern Iowa, just beyond the stretch of rural road, lies a quiet spot with a story that shaped the music of a generation. This is Don McLean American Pie Parking and Recreation Area—not just a patch of land, but a living tribute to the legends who changed the world with their music, and to the power of community to keep those memories alive.

On February 3, 1959, a plane carrying Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and The Big Bopper crashed just north of Clear Lake. The world lost three brilliant musicians, and America lost a piece of its soul—a moment immortalized by Don McLean as "the day the music died." Years later, Don McLean’s iconic song “American Pie” would become an anthem, capturing the heartbreak and hope of an entire era.

Our park stands as a living tribute to that history. With Don McLean’s blessing, we’ve created a welcoming place where visitors from all over the world can walk the final steps to the crash site, reflect on music’s enduring spirit, and find community in shared memories.

But we are more than a memorial. We’re a small, local nonprofit—fueled by volunteers and the generosity of those who care—dedicated to making the lives of others better. From free parking for thousands of Buddy Holly fans, to our dreams of new signs, gravel extensions, a family-friendly play area, a shelter house, and camping for travelers, every dollar goes directly to making this a place of comfort and connection.

We do not receive corporate funding. We are not a government project. We are everyday people, just like you, investing our own time and resources to keep this living memorial thriving for the next generation.
