Not a 4-H event, but well-attended by 4-Hers. Last year, two club members attended; one took home the silver medal in Junior .22.
"Plans are currently underway for the 2022 UP Regional MYSC (Michigan Youth Sportsmen Competition), formally MYHEC that will be held at the Chippewa County Shooting Association on Saturday, June 25th. While the program has a new name, it is still the same great youth program that has been held in Chippewa County since 2014 (except for 2020). We are starting the planning a little later than in previous years because of the legal work involved in re-branding the organization.
The UP Regional MYSC is a program in outdoor skills and safety training for young hunters. Open only to those who have completed hunter-safety training at the state or provincial level, the program is conducted under simulated hunting conditions to provide the best practical environment for reinforcing and testing a young hunter's skills.
The MYSC state challenge is a two-day challenge held in Lansing in August. In 2014, the MYHEC board held its first UP Regional Event at the Chippewa County Shooting Association. This is a one-day event where six disciplines are offered: .22 light rifle, muzzle loading, archery, shotgun, hunter safety trail, and orienteering or wildlife id. Both events offer an educational environment with a competitive edge; however, the UP event offers all the necessary equipment and instruction from trained volunteers. This event is an unique opportunity to introduce youth to new skills and/or allow them to enhance skills they may already have. You can watch the YouTube video of the first year’s event at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A_k2tPaXx6I.
This is a great opportunity to pass down the love for the outdoors to the next generation. At the 2014 State MYHEC, Jimmy Gretzinger of Michigan Out of Doors, featured MYHEC on his September 5th show, and he said MYHEC “has to be one of the best kept secrets in the outdoors,” and “this event and the stuff happening here today, was to be honest, one of the most important youth events I have been at.”
