Copper Tips 4-H Archery Club Located in Michigan's Western Upper Peninsula, Copper Tips is a 4-H Archery Club for area youth, ages 7-19. Enroll at http://mi.4honline.com/ .

In the Fall of 2015, the Houghton-Keweenaw 4-H Council applied for a grant to start up an Archery Club through the Keweenaw Community Foundation. The Youth Advisory Council approved funding the club in November. The Copper Country United Way also supports the archery program through scholarships. The Copper Tips 4-H Archery Club was organized in January of 2016, and meets on the 1st Tuesday of the month, currently at the Nara Nature Chalet.

"Plans are currently underway for the 2022 UP Regional MYSC (Michigan Youth Sportsmen Competition), formally MYHEC that will be held at the Chippewa County Shooting Association on Saturday, June 25th. While the program has a new name, it is still the same great youth program that has been held in Chippewa County since 2014 (except for 2020). We are starting the planning a little later than in previous years because of the legal work involved in re-branding the organization.

The UP Regional MYSC is a program in outdoor skills and safety training for young hunters. Open only to those who have completed hunter-safety training at the state or provincial level, the program is conducted under simulated hunting conditions to provide the best practical environment for reinforcing and testing a young hunter's skills.

The MYSC state challenge is a two-day challenge held in Lansing in August. In 2014, the MYHEC board held its first UP Regional Event at the Chippewa County Shooting Association. This is a one-day event where six disciplines are offered: .22 light rifle, muzzle loading, archery, shotgun, hunter safety trail, and orienteering or wildlife id. Both events offer an educational environment with a competitive edge; however, the UP event offers all the necessary equipment and instruction from trained volunteers. This event is an unique opportunity to introduce youth to new skills and/or allow them to enhance skills they may already have. You can watch the YouTube video of the first year’s event at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A_k2tPaXx6I.

This is a great opportunity to pass down the love for the outdoors to the next generation. At the 2014 State MYHEC, Jimmy Gretzinger of Michigan Out of Doors, featured MYHEC on his September 5th show, and he said MYHEC “has to be one of the best kept secrets in the outdoors,” and “this event and the stuff happening here today, was to be honest, one of the most important youth events I have been at.”

Congratulations to another one of our Copper Tips on winning the 2020 Houghton-Keweenaw County 4-H Senior Scholarship! Noah Bach was a founding member of the Club, and President for several years. Also active on area soccer, baseball, & basketball teams, Noah still made time for 4-H as a teenager. With his strong leadership skills and variety of 4-H experiences, we wish him the best on what is sure to be a successful future!

"For those interested in 4-H rifle practice, would you be available October 12, 19, and/or 26, around 11 AM - 1 PM? If so, preferred location is LLHSA at Rice Lake, but if you find that too far but would be able to do just south of Calumet, please post that along with the dates you could do. (Please post replies at the same question on Keweenaw Explorers 4-H Club)."
