Happy Equinox!

To celebrate, let’s look at some of the beautiful native Asters (Symphyotrichum novae-angliae, Eurybia divaricata, and Symphyotrichum lateriflorum) found on our preserves. These latest of summer blooming plants offer pollinators an important source of nectar in the final weeks of the growing season. They prefer well drained soil and full sun and can be found in fields and along roadsides all over New England.

Their folk name is, appropriately, Farewell-Summers. Look for these examples at the Ball Field Preserve!

Climate change is impacting the health of our woodlands. To address this concern, CNLT is working with foresters and biologists to develop and implement a management plan, utilizing stewardship best practices to help keep our forests climate resilient.

The Hancock Community Garden held their annual Pot Luck Picnic this evening at the Ball Field Preserve. Fresh produce from gardeners’ plots and blueberries from the Wood Trail fields were on the menu!

Today marks the beginning of our native plants series…and currently blooming in the woods is the delicate Starflower (Trientalis Borealis)! Among the most prolific of spring woodland blooms, Starflowers are native to North America and grow from California to Newfoundland.

They are only in bloom for a short time, look for them today! We found these beauties in the Sam Ball woods.

Trientalis borealis are one of the few flowers that typically have seven petals, although they can have up to nine on their slim stalk. How many can you find?

It was a very productive Saturday at the Community Garden! Last year, a couple porcupines made a buffet of several gardeners’ plots, so today we reinforced the bottom of our fence with chicken wire and wood chips.

We uncovered a spotted salamander on the southeast corner and two of our youngest gardeners made sure it had a comfy (and well marked) new home!
