Today marks the beginning of our native plants series…and currently blooming in the woods is the delicate Starflower (Trientalis Borealis)! Among the most prolific of spring woodland blooms, Starflowers are native to North America and grow from California to Newfoundland.

They are only in bloom for a short time, look for them today! We found these beauties in the Sam Ball woods.

Trientalis borealis are one of the few flowers that typically have seven petals, although they can have up to nine on their slim stalk. How many can you find?

It was a very productive Saturday at the Community Garden! Last year, a couple porcupines made a buffet of several gardeners’ plots, so today we reinforced the bottom of our fence with chicken wire and wood chips.

We uncovered a spotted salamander on the southeast corner and two of our youngest gardeners made sure it had a comfy (and well marked) new home!

It sure did feel like Spring this afternoon! Such a perfect opportunity to shake a bit of that cabin fever and enjoy a walk in the woods.

Were you able to get outside today?

What a winter! Yesterday’s storm dumped over a foot of powder on downeast Maine…and the cold temperatures are going to make sure it sticks around. We hope everyone is finished shoveling and now has some time to go enjoy!

Skating on Ice Pond!

The coming rain may thin the ice, but as of today 12/28/25, there are more than 5" inches of beautiful ice, shoveled lanes, and wonderful neighbors enjoying the gifts of nature!

(video may cause motion sickness! And please always beware of the inlet and outlet of any body of water in the winter)

Thank you to CNLT for this precious community gathering spot!
