Music on Norway Pond strives to bring the highest caliber artists to Hancock, NH in a series of concerts occurring primarily during the fall, winter and spring. It also seeks to create performance opportunities for children and adults who live in Hancock and the surrounding Monadnock region. Music on Norway Pond also helps sustain existing performing ensembles and musical initiatives in the town o
f Hancock. Founded by Johanna Hill Simpson, Music on Norway Pond presented its first concert at the Hancock Meeting House in May, 2008. From the beginning, ticket prices were affordable and the concerts were one-hour long with no intermission. The affordable ticket price and compact concert length quickly attracted an enthusiastic following. The compelling artistry of the visiting musicians has been the other key factor behind the growing number of concert-goers. Music on Norway Pond audiences trust that they will consistently experience memorable and affecting concerts. In 2009, Music on Norway Pond created the Norway Pond Junior Minstrels (also known as the Junior Mints), a performing arts ensemble with singing at its core. The first twenty-four children to apply, between age 6 and 13, are accepted into the group. No auditions are required. The children were from several towns in the Monadnock region. Each spring, the group presents a musical such as Honk! Jr., 1776, HMS Pinafore, Damn Yankees, Once Upon a Mattress, and others. The Norway Pond Festival Singers, a chorus of 30 women, founded in 2007, are also part of Music on Norway Pond. Their February concert includes men and often soloists and instrumentalists. Past concerts have been Trial By Jury, Chichester Psalms, Faure Requiem, Police Log, and Carmina Burana.
