Join us this Saturday at Nōmilu Fishpond, a wahi pana of deep cultural and ecological significance, for a day of hands-on restoration, learning, and connection. Together with Kauaʻi Sea Farm () and ʻOnomilu, we’ll continue clearing invasive plants, strengthening the ʻauwai and kuapā, and planting native ʻakulikuli along the pond’s edge.🔄
Restoring loko iʻa like Nōmilu creates powerful ripple effects from mauka to makai. These fishponds act as natural filters that improve water quality, trap sediment, and reduce nutrient runoff — helping to protect the coral reefs that thrive just offshore. They also provide safe nursery habitat for juvenile fish that later replenish surrounding reef ecosystems, strengthening the balance between people, place, and ocean.☯️
This work also supports our efforts through the Kauaʻi Coral Restoration Nursery, located right here at Nōmilu. As a land-based nursery dedicated to restoring Kauaʻi’s degraded reefs, KCRN will begin collecting its first corals later this month in partnership with the Hawaiʻi Coral Restoration Nursery (), Coral Resilience Lab () and the Division of Aquatic Resources (). The connection between healthy watersheds, loko iʻa, and reef restoration is one continuous story — one we’re proud to carry forward together with our community. 🌿💧🌊🪸🐟
