We are the Building and Kahu Ź»Ai Pono (Culinary) Programs and school gardens at Hāna School, the community garden of Mahele Farm, and the kuŹ»i kalo and loŹ»i restoration program, Mālama Hāloa. Our non-profit organization’s mission is to provide Hāna youth with a way to learn that makes sense to them, builds their self-esteem, and shows them they have the power to change their futures. This mission is built upon the core pillars of education, sustainability, community health, and cultural fortitude, as we work to meet the real needs of our East Maui communities. Our core values:

PILINA (Connection): Through inclusive communications and trusting relationships, we connect in meaningful ways to harness individual passions and carry out our work together. KŌKUA (Assistance): We are rooted in Hāna and intentional in our contribution to community health through mālama of our kÅ«puna, Ź»Åpio, keiki, and aloha ʻāina. HIKI NŌ (Ź»Cause can!): Our work ethic drives us to action—and to instill this value in our youth. We do what no one else thinks is possible, in ways that may not be conventional, to leave things better than we found them.

Hāna: How are we liking the custom Kou + Mango tables Paniolo Bar Hāna-Maui Resort? 🤠

Our collaboration with Hāna-Maui Resort allows for Mango and Kou woods to shine. The Mango, harvested from Koali, Hāna, features live-edges that bring the curvatures found in nature into the Resort’s gathering space. The patches or wedges that you see, known as pewa, are fundamental technical Hawaiian designs utilized for mending woodwork. The pewa displayed, made with Kou, lend to the significance of making mends throughout a lifetime.

Mahalo to the limahana, the working hands, behind the custom Mango + Kou tables at the Hāna-Maui Resort — Joshua, Kamu, G, Irie, Lawapono.

Did you know? The Hāna School gardens, stewarded by Ma Ka Hana Ka Ź»Ike, are certified under Good Agricultural Practices (GAP). This certification was awarded in 2025, after Ma Ka Hana Ka Ź»Ike participated in trainings with North Shore EVP. With this GAP certification, produce grown here on campus is served in our cafeteria lunches. šŸ‘šŸ½

One of the special aspects of the Garden to Cafeteria process is that our students are a part of growing & harvesting the produce that will be served on their lunch plates! Last week, papa 9 + 10 of Kula Kaiapuni o Hāna harvested ʻuala for the cafeteria. There's no better way to kick off the school year.
