Sending our aloha to all who have been impacted by the Kona low storm.

In times like these, we are reminded of the steadiness and deep aloha of our people and community. From sharing ice for coolers to meals with neighbors before the food goes bad—it was beautiful to witness our Hāna community in action.

Mahalo nui to all those on the ground who worked hard through it all—and are still working—to help keep our communities safe, the power on, and our roads open.

The Wahi Pana Study Group Logo — designed by Brennan of Sig Zane Designs () — draws its inspiration from Ke Ala Loa ‘o Pi’ilani, the ancient stone footpath whose fragments still remain along the Hāna coastline today.

These stones, set by our kūpuna centuries ago, remind us of the importance of connection, unity and an interwoven moku.

WAHI PANA STUDY GROUP

Sig Zane Design’s, Wahi Pana Study Group, convened in Hāna at Ala Kukui this past summer.

The outcome are SIX new designs that capture the stories and traditions of people and place that are a visual testimony to generational ea and wealth.

The first THREE:

KAUHULU AKULE //
celebrates Hāna’s long-standing tradition of akule fishing and the expert kilo i’a of this place

MAKAKILOI’A //
honors the legacy of Maka Kilo I’a, the hale at Ka’uiki used for storing akule nets and for observing the kauhulu akule that come in the bay

HALE LOKE //
preserves the fond memories of Makua Hale in Koali, and it’s cherished lokelani bushes— “E ho’i ka ulu iā hale loke, i ka hale lau o ka ‘iwa’iwa.”

The procession of Lonomakua into the ceremonial space is accompanied by chanting and clapping that is meant to rouse, encourage, and uplift the processioners as well as the kupaʻaina from Maui Hikina who are there to welcome and recognize the season shift.
