The Hamtramck Historical Commission (HHC) was formed by city ordinance in 1998 with the mission of collecting material about Hamtramck's rich history, preserving that material, chronicling Hamtramck of today for future generations and presenting information about the history of the city. The Friends
of Historical Hamtramck, a 501 (c)(3) non- profit corporation, functions as the HHC’s fund-raising

component. The principal project of the HHC currently is the establishment of the Hamtramck Historical Museum. The historical museum will serve as:

- An educational resource center. Hamtramckans have made significant contributions nationally and even internationally in the fields of labor, industry, education, science, sports and entertainment.

-The museum will be a showcase of these accomplishments.

-A community resource. Through displays, it will instill and reinforce a sense of community by highlighting Hamtramck’s rich history and the valuable contributions Hamtramckans have made to society.

-A community center. The museum will provide programs, such as lectures, craft and dance demonstrations, book signings, slide shows, and cultural displays and activities. It will work in conjunction with the Hamtramck Public Schools to hold classes and be a destination for student field trips.

-An economic contributor. The museum will bring in visitors not only from Michigan, but nationally and internationally.

-A tour anchor.

- A source of pride for the community.

Today we were invited to take part in the Journal of Law in Society's 2026 Symposium at Wayne State University Law School. The theme for this year's symposium was Canceling the State: Legal and Political Backlash Against Public Institutions. There were four fascinating panel discussions on K-12 Education, Public Institutions Providing Public Information, Higher Education, and Museums & Related Issues. It was great to hear from and meet our fellow panelists. We want to give a big thank you to the Journal of Law in Society, Wayne State University Law School, and Wayne State University for having us!

Our joint was jumping on Saturday night! We want to thank those that were able to make it out to this year's Prohibition Fundraiser. Without your support we can't do the things we do! We also want to thank all those that volunteered their time, our caterer for the delicious food, and the swell jazz musicians that provided us with nifty tunes! We look forward to seeing you all again at next year's fundraiser! ( Please share your photos with us if you attended! )
