Crawlin’ Crab 5K & Half Marathon

A big thank you to Pete Hanson with J&A Racing for joining us at our Hampton Rotary meeting and sharing information about the upcoming Crawlin’ Crab 5K & Half Marathon on Saturday, October 3!

The Crawlin’ Crab is the largest fitness event on the Peninsula, bringing nearly 6,000 runners from across the country to Hampton Roads. Even better, proceeds from the event benefit the Dorothy Hoefer Breast Cancer Center.

Pete also shared a great volunteer opportunity for Hampton Rotary! Our club can earn a $150 donation by providing 15 volunteers to help serve beer at the post-race celebration, plus $10 for every additional volunteer. We may also collect tips from guests, with a QR code available for those who don’t have cash.

Here are the details:

📅 Date: Saturday, October 3
⏰ Time: 7:15 AM – 11:00 AM
📍 Location: Hampton Roads Convention Center
🍺 Volunteer Role: Pouring beer during the post-race celebration
🔞 Age Requirement: 21 or older

We need at least 15 volunteers to participate so we can guarantee this volunteer opportunity for our club.

Please take a moment to officially register using the link below so we can make sure all 15 volunteer spots are filled:

Register to Volunteer: https://j-a-racing.volunteerlocal.com/volunteer/?id=112500&job_name=beer%20pouring%20-%20hampton%20rotary%20club&job_password=ROTARY

Thank you, Pete, for coming out and sharing this opportunity with Hampton Rotary — and thank you in advance to everyone who volunteers to support another Hampton Rotary fundraiser!

Investing in the future of our local students! For over a decade, the Hampton Rotary Club has supported graduating seniors from Hampton high schools through our annual scholarship program. This year, we were thrilled to award $1,500 scholarships (with an additional $1,000 for their second year) to two incredible students from the Class of 2026 🎓

Congratulations to our 2026 scholarship recipients:

Wai-Yun Quaeh, Kecoughtan High School valedictorian, Key Club president, varsity athlete, and hospital volunteer. She is heading to the University of Virginia to study Kinesiology on her path to becoming a physician.

Angelina Christie, Hampton High School salutatorian, marching band member, and tennis player. She will also attend the University of Virginia, majoring in Environmental Science to help give back to the community.

We were also excited to catch up with two of our 2025 scholars:

Faith Jennings (Kecoughtan High), now at UNC Charlotte studying architecture, who earned Dean’s and Chancellor’s List honors while volunteering with Habitat for Humanity.

Charles Moore (Phoebus High), who completed marine biology research at Randolph-Macon and is transferring to Old Dominion University to major in biomedical engineering.

A huge thank you to our Scholarship Committee Chair Ruth Simmons, along with Tim Smith, Wally Arnold, and Rick Harman for their dedication to reviewing applications each spring and finding the next generation of leaders.

We are so proud to support these outstanding young leaders as they take their next steps! 🎓
