One of our Prevention Project™ program teachers recently shared a powerful moment from Lesson 3: The Profile of a Trafficker with high school students:

“When we look at the mugshot slide, they all yell out ‘Diddy’ when R. Kelly pops on the screen. Then it turns into conversations about Jeffrey Epstein, why Diddy isn’t on there yet, or students singing songs that glamorize pimps.”

— Prevention Project Teacher, Staunton & Waynesboro Schools

These conversations reveal something important: trafficking culture has been normalized in music, media, and entertainment for far too long.

The Prevention Project™ program helps students think critically about the media and content they consume and recognize the realities behind exploitation. Awareness is prevention. 💙

Mental Health Moment Series 🧠

As we head into summer, now is a great time to check in with yourself and create a mental well-being action plan. A simple, intentional way to support your mental health, recognize what helps you feel your best, and identify tools you can turn to when life feels overwhelming.

Your plan might include things like daily habits that ground you, people you can reach out to for support, coping strategies that help you manage stress, and reminders of what brings you peace and joy.

Taking time to plan for your mental well-being is a powerful act of self-care and prevention.

💚 As we close out Mental Health Awareness Month, let’s continue to be aware of our needs to maintain our well-being by creating a mental well-being action plan!

One of the most powerful parts of The Prevention Project™ program is the awareness it builds in students and the way it opens their eyes to what trafficking really looks like.

When asked what they didn’t realize before the program, one student shared:

“Some things I didn't realize about human trafficking before going through the program are that there are several different types of trafficking whether it be labor, familial, gang or s*x trafficking.”

This kind of learning is exactly why prevention education matters. When middle and high school students are equipped with accurate information, they are better prepared to recognize risks, protect themselves, and support others.

💡 Bring The Prevention Project™ program your school and help empower students with knowledge that can save lives.

Mental Health Moment Series 🧠

What are boundaries?

Boundaries are the limits and expectations we set for ourselves and others in our relationships, work, and daily life. They help us protect our time, energy, emotions, and well-being by clearly communicating what is okay and what is not okay for us.

Healthy boundaries are not about shutting people out; they’re about creating respectful, balanced relationships where your needs matter too.

Here are a few ways to set healthy boundaries in life, work, and relationships:
✨ Learn to recognize your limits; emotionally, physically, and mentally
✨ Communicate clearly and respectfully when something doesn’t feel right
✨ Say “no” when you need to, without over-explaining
✨ Prioritize rest and protect your personal time
✨ Surround yourself with people who respect your boundaries

Setting boundaries can feel uncomfortable at first, but it’s a powerful act of self-care and protection for your mental well-being.

This week’s challenge: practice one healthy boundary that supports your peace.

Promote mental well-being by setting and honoring healthy boundaries. You deserve them.

This Memorial Day, we pause to honor and remember the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our country. 🇺🇸

We are grateful for their sacrifice and the freedoms we are able to experience because of their courage and commitment. Today, we also hold space for the families who carry their memory every day.

May we not only remember them, but live in a way that honors their legacy with gratitude, unity, and purpose.

In remembrance. In gratitude. Always. ❤️🤍💙

Did you know that a young person could believe they are in love with their trafficker?

In many cases, traffickers use grooming tactics like gifts, constant attention, compliments, and physical affection to build trust and create a false sense of care often in ways the youth may not have experienced before.

Over time, these manipulative behaviors can normalize the relationship, and many victims may genuinely believe they love their trafficker, even when the relationship is actually exploitative. What may seem like a normal or even loving connection can be a sign of something much more harmful beneath the surface and it’s one that can be easy to miss in the youth you see every day in your classroom. That’s why awareness is so important.

Learn how to recognize these signs and respond appropriately by taking our Youth Service Provider Training, by visiting www.prevention-project.org/youth-service-provider

Equip your team to learn the signs of trafficking and help protect youth in your community.

Mental Health Moment Series 🧠

What is mindfulness?

Mindfulness is the practice of intentionally paying attention to the present moment—without judgment. It means noticing your thoughts, feelings, and surroundings as they are, rather than getting stuck in worries about the past or future.

At its core, mindfulness is about being fully present in your life, even during ordinary moments.

It can look like:
✨ Taking slow, deep breaths when you feel overwhelmed
✨ Noticing what you see, hear, or feel in the moment
✨ Eating a meal without distractions and truly tasting your food
✨ Taking a walk and paying attention to your surroundings
✨ Pausing to check in with your thoughts and emotions without judging them

Practicing mindfulness doesn’t mean eliminating stress, it means learning how to respond to it with greater awareness, calm, and clarity.

Even a few minutes a day can support mental well-being, reduce stress, and help ground you when life feels busy or overwhelming.

This week, try one small mindfulness practice and notice how it feels.

Promote mental well-being through mindfulness practices and self-awareness. You deserve moments of peace.

Did you know that youth don’t have to leave their homes to be trafficked?

Human trafficking is not always kidnapping. In many cases, it happens within unhealthy and manipulative relationships sometimes even under the guise of “family” or “romance.” A young person can be experiencing exploitation while still attending school, participating in class, and showing up to extracurricular activities every day.

That means the warning signs can be easy to miss even for caring adults who see them regularly. 👀

This is why awareness matters.

Our Youth Service Provider Training equips educators, youth-serving professionals, and community members to better understand, identify, and respond to potential trafficking situations. Because knowing the signs can make all the difference in protecting a young person’s life and future.

💡 Learn the signs.
💡 Know what to look for.
💡 Be prepared to respond.

Mental Health Moment Series 🧠

What is mental health? Mental health includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel, act, handle stress, relate to others, and make healthy choices each day.

Mental health is an important part of overall health at every stage of life from childhood through adulthood. Just like physical health, our mental health can change over time depending on life experiences, relationships, and challenges we may face.

Understanding mental health matters because it helps us recognize when we or someone else may need support, encourages healthy coping skills, and reminds us that caring for our minds is just as important as caring for our bodies.

Taking care of your mental health can look like:
✨ Resting when needed
✨ Talking with someone you trust
✨ Setting healthy boundaries
✨ Managing stress in healthy ways
✨ Seeking professional help when needed

Let’s continue breaking stigma through education, awareness, and support. You are not alone. 💚

May is also, Foster Care Awareness Month, a time to recognize the strength and resilience of youth in foster care and the families, advocates, and professionals who support them.

Foster youth can face unique vulnerabilities and unmet needs that may place them at greater risk of exploitation and trafficking. That’s why prevention matters.

Education and awareness are critical to keeping foster youth safe from the traps of traffickers. By equipping youth, foster families, caregivers, and child welfare professionals with the tools to recognize warning signs, build healthy support systems, and respond effectively, we can help create safer futures.

This month, we stand with foster youth and reaffirm our commitment to protection, prevention, and hope.
