On International Day of the Girl Child, a group of girls in Ghana has a message for you. It begins with two simple words: Thank you.

But their story is about so much more.

Through our partnership with Carolina International School in Ghana, the iamRuth Foundation has helped expand a school campus that now serves more than 1,000 students annually, built a girls’ dormitory, and supported scholarships that help make education possible.

Yet across Africa and the African Diaspora, financial hardship, distance, and unequal opportunities continue to threaten girls’ educational dreams.

For some, another school term depends on something as simple as having the resources to remain enrolled.

Just $61.33 covers one girl’s boarding fees for an entire school term.

Today, we celebrate these beautiful girls, their dreams, and the possibilities ahead.

“It’s about time.”

That was the response from more than a few family members and friends when iamRuth Foundation Founder and President Dr. Ruth Jones Nichols decided to begin a sabbatical earlier this year.

The sabbatical was not about stepping away from purpose but creating enough space to listen for what the season was asking of her next.

That pause opened a different kind of inquiry: What is this season producing? Is the life you are building also sustaining the woman who has to live it? What still deserves your yes—and what may now require the courage to choose differently?

At Purposeher, Dr. Jones Nichols will join Dr. Keshia Brown for a fireside conversation about leadership beyond titles, tending the environments that shape us, protecting what matters, and creating a definition of success spacious enough for our whole lives.

She joins a powerful lineup of women and men bringing wisdom, faith, experience, and perspective to this year’s gathering.

That question stayed with us after Sustaining Together Summit ’26, hosted by Cousin and YWCA South Hampton Roads.

Michelle Ellis Young and Margaret Mitchell spoke candidly about the emotional, physical and mental cost leadership can carry. Tonight, “pouring into her” meant showing up for the YWCA South Hampton Roads in a way that was beyond something special. 🧡

At a time when critical funding remains frozen, Pouring Into Her: An Evening of Purpose and Connection - hosted by Kimberly Wimbish and a phenomenal group of women - reminded us what community can do: give, volunteer, share expertise, make connections, open doors, and simply ask, “How can I help?”

Women and men showed up in support of an organization that has long shown up for women and families across our community. This local YW is part of a larger global movement that deserves our unrelenting advocacy.

At the iamRuth Foundation, we believe resources, relationships, and opportunities help people flourish. Tonight, we saw all three in action.

What happens when women leaders are invited into a space designed first for listening?

On August 25, the iamRuth Foundation convened a thoughtfully curated, intimate group of women leaders in Hampton Roads to launch the Global Women’s Leadership Exchange (GWLE) Listening Series.

Together, we explored one question at the heart of our mission: What resources, relationships, and opportunities do women and girls need to thrive, lead, and transform their communities?

Early reflections touched on authentic relationships, access to opportunity, intergenerational connection, spaces for honest conversation, and what women need to flourish while leading.

Hampton Roads marked the first stop in a listening journey across seven cities, five states, and two continents—one that will help inform how the iamRuth Foundation invests, partners, and leads.

When we invest in our environments, we invest in each other. 🌿

This past Sunday, the iamRuth Foundation community came together for a deeply intentional project. We believe that housing stability and dignity go hand in hand, and that the spaces women and families experience during transitional seasons should reflect profound care.

That belief inspired us to partner with YWCA South Hampton Roads to create a Sensory Garden at their Almost Home Emergency Shelter.

Volunteers rolled up their sleeves to plant perennials and build raised beds alongside master carpenter Harold Chalmers. A stunning new mural by artist Clayton Singleton now anchors the space, reflecting the preferences and stories of the residents themselves.

Led by our founder, president, and Master Gardener in training, Dr. Ruth Jones Nichols, this weekend reminded us that growth takes time, and collective impact requires community. We are endlessly grateful to every donor, partner, and volunteer who helped bring this project to life.

What we plant can become part of someone else’s story. 🌱

For our Founder and President, Dr. Ruth Jones Nichols, the connection between gardens, community, and safe shelter is deeply personal.

The flowers pictured here were grown and shared by her mother. Both mother and daughter are Master Gardeners, and both understand that nurturing something takes patience, intention, and care.

At just 12 years old, Dr. Ruth and her family found refuge at YWCA of South Hampton Roads. Years later, she returned to lead the same organization that had once provided shelter for her family.

That legacy gives our upcoming Community Garden Project with YWCA South Hampton Roads a meaning that goes far beyond the garden itself.

Together, we are creating an outdoor space where women and children can experience moments of peace, connection, belonging, and dignity.

This is what it means to flourish in community: to honor what has sustained us, tend to what is needed now, and help create something meaningful for those who come next.

Sometimes, a garden is more than a garden.

Sometimes, it is a place where a new story can take root. 🌺
