What happens when women leaders are invited into a space designed first for listening?

On August 25, the iamRuth Foundation convened a thoughtfully curated, intimate group of women leaders in Hampton Roads to launch the Global Women’s Leadership Exchange (GWLE) Listening Series.

Together, we explored one question at the heart of our mission: What resources, relationships, and opportunities do women and girls need to thrive, lead, and transform their communities?

Early reflections touched on authentic relationships, access to opportunity, intergenerational connection, spaces for honest conversation, and what women need to flourish while leading.

Hampton Roads marked the first stop in a listening journey across seven cities, five states, and two continents—one that will help inform how the iamRuth Foundation invests, partners, and leads.

When we invest in our environments, we invest in each other. 🌿

This past Sunday, the iamRuth Foundation community came together for a deeply intentional project. We believe that housing stability and dignity go hand in hand, and that the spaces women and families experience during transitional seasons should reflect profound care.

That belief inspired us to partner with YWCA South Hampton Roads to create a Sensory Garden at their Almost Home Emergency Shelter.

Volunteers rolled up their sleeves to plant perennials and build raised beds alongside master carpenter Harold Chalmers. A stunning new mural by artist Clayton Singleton now anchors the space, reflecting the preferences and stories of the residents themselves.

Led by our founder, president, and Master Gardener in training, Dr. Ruth Jones Nichols, this weekend reminded us that growth takes time, and collective impact requires community. We are endlessly grateful to every donor, partner, and volunteer who helped bring this project to life.

What we plant can become part of someone else’s story. 🌱

For our Founder and President, Dr. Ruth Jones Nichols, the connection between gardens, community, and safe shelter is deeply personal.

The flowers pictured here were grown and shared by her mother. Both mother and daughter are Master Gardeners, and both understand that nurturing something takes patience, intention, and care.

At just 12 years old, Dr. Ruth and her family found refuge at YWCA of South Hampton Roads. Years later, she returned to lead the same organization that had once provided shelter for her family.

That legacy gives our upcoming Community Garden Project with YWCA South Hampton Roads a meaning that goes far beyond the garden itself.

Together, we are creating an outdoor space where women and children can experience moments of peace, connection, belonging, and dignity.

This is what it means to flourish in community: to honor what has sustained us, tend to what is needed now, and help create something meaningful for those who come next.

Sometimes, a garden is more than a garden.

Sometimes, it is a place where a new story can take root. 🌺

There is more to creating a meaningful community space than what we see on the finished day.

Long before people gather, someone has to prepare the ground.

For our Community Garden Project, that means testing the soil, assessing sun exposure, measuring for raised garden beds, and preparing the walls for a mural that will bring new life to the space.

On August 23, we’ll gather with the YWCA of South Hampton Roads to turn that preparation into something tangible, a garden, a gathering place, and a space where community can grow together.

The quiet work matters. The collective work matters. And every helping hand helps bring the vision closer to bloom. 🌱

When was the last time you checked in with yourself, not your calendar, your inbox, or your responsibilities... but yourself?

Many of us can move through an entire day responding to everyone else's needs before we stop to notice our own.

We keep going because there's always one more email, one more meeting, one more person depending on us.

And before long, we forget that we, too, need care.

This carousel is simply an invitation.

Not to add five more things to your schedule, but to discover five small moments already hidden within your day.

A question before the morning begins.

A quiet pause before reacting.

Permission to let something wait.

A conversation with someone who helps you feel grounded.

A moment of gratitude before your head meets the pillow.

They each take about a minute.

Some of the most important seasons in nature don't look very exciting at first.

If you've ever visited a lavender field in early summer, you've seen it at its most breathtaking state, covered in vibrant purple blooms and filled with fragrance.

But lavender doesn't stay in bloom forever.

After flowering, it enters a quieter season of rest. The fields become less dramatic, yet beneath the surface the plant is doing essential work, storing energy and strengthening its roots for the next season.

It's a gentle reminder that our lives aren't meant to be lived in constant bloom.

There are seasons for showing up boldly.

And there are seasons for slowing down, healing, reflecting, and making space for what's next.
Neither season is more valuable than the other.

Growth isn't measured only by what others can see. Sometimes, the most meaningful transformation is happening where no one else is looking.

Imagine what becomes possible when communities learn with one another, not just about one another.

This is the vision behind the Global Women's Leadership Exchange (GWLE).

Over the coming months, we'll gather with women leaders across the United States and Ghana to listen, learn, and build authentic relationships. Those conversations will lay the foundation for our inaugural GWLE International Convening in Ghana in October 2027, where ideas, experiences, and community wisdom will continue to grow together.

Every voice is thoughtfully invited. Every relationship has the potential to create lasting impact for women and girls.
