VOLUNTEER APPRECIATION POST!

When I took over the race in 2021, George asked that I continue with our lap counting timing system. This was an easy request to accommodate, as the volunteers and lap tracking system at this race truly give it an old-school ultra feel and sets it apart from other ultra events.

This year, we had SO MANY people offer to volunteer I actually had to respectfully request volunteers move to different time slots or even close down some time slots altogether.

I got so many compliments on the volunteers this year I could not keep track of them all. To summarize: their energy, their passion, their dedication, and their positive attitude made the race more like a party. And I could not agree more!

Thank you to our Course Director, Jon "One More Lap" Olszyk, who handles everything when I am out checking the course, and to all of our volunteers this year. We had several volunteers that have returned for their umpteenth time, and two other volunteers that returned for another round of the full 24 hours.

We appreciate all that you bring to the race... this year and every year!

Every year, I choose a photo from the race that I feel embodies the spirit of the event. This photo becomes the banner for the next year's race on Ultrasignup.

Four years ago, it was a picture of Robert White and George- two legends sharing some miles together.

Three years ago, I chose a picture of Robert White and Robert Davies. Two proud military generations on the same team, sharing their love for running and our country.

Two years ago, I chose a collage of Beverly Grimmett getting her 500 mile jacket. Her tenacity through the elements was inspiring to witness.

Last year, it was three superstars of the race- Jim, Tim, and Seko. Sharing a journey (and accomplishments) that many newcomers to the race will one day strive for.

This year, I had a message in the pre-race briefing that emphasized unity and commonality, despite what we felt or believed outside of the race. Cancer sucks. It has affected everyone in some way, and that is why we gather every year- to crush cancer one loop at a time.

I saw a picture taken by Jay Proffitt Creative Media and I instantly felt the message shining through that photo.

Laura Dover and Michael Horner, passing each other on the trail. Giving a high-five. Supporting each other, cheering each other on, lifting one another up. THAT is the entire backbone of this race.

It is with great honor that I unveil the new banner photo for Ultrasignup, and invite everyone to mark their calendars for the next edition of the Virginia 24 Hour Run for Cancer on April 24th and 25th, 2027.

While we had some big miles on Saturday and Sunday, we also had some BIG achievements!

500 Mile Jackets:
Susan Hagel
David Anderson
Laura Dover
Chris Hiatt

1,000 Mile Belt Buckles:
Rachel Swift
Paul Starling

One of the biggest milestones we had was Glenn Hrinda, Bib #1, who became the first person to cross the 1,500 mile threshold in the history of the race. He achieved this like he has achieved every other milestone- through consistent perseverance, determination, and the support of an amazing team and his wife "Mom Liz".

There were unfortunately several roadblocks to procuring Glenn's final award for this achievement (more roadblocks than downtown Lynchburg- IYKYK), so I was only able to present him with part of the final product- a waterproof Dueter backpack/duffel bag. The intention of this award for Glenn- and for all who follow- is to have something that carries them on as many future adventures as their feet have carried them in this race.

Congratulations to Glenn, an amazing member of our 757 Ultrarunning community. We are lucky to have him!

The results are in!

Despite the elements, Run 4 Life produced the second highest winning mileage in the HISTORY of the race! Congrats to every team that recruited, gathered together, assembled, toed the line, and laid down miles in the fight against cancer.

The team atmosphere for a competitive race like this is unlike any I've ever seen. THANK YOU for continuing to create that atmosphere year after year.

An email has also been sent out with this Google OneDrive results link: https://1drv.ms/x/c/9782339ece170865/IQBLXCrxj0JpQKXt10i966L_AcJjIyFGeJD887dJzuRuWpo

Please check your results and confirm they are accurate. If they are not accurate, PLEASE DO NOT REPLY TO THIS POST. Please email me at [email protected].

I have two or three more posts planned for tomorrow. 'Til then!

We have a ton of social media posts planned the next couple of days as we work on wrapping up the race- including full preliminary results which we hope to post tonight. Remember to follow the page to not miss any updates!

In the meantime, we hope everyone enjoyed a new element to the course this year- PUZZLE PASS! Which is the section after you come out of Whispering Pines and head towards the first split.

The goal was to put out fun riddles and give people the chance to take their mind off the miles. We got positive feedback, so will more than likely continue that next year with three new riddles.

The riddles this year (and answers) were:

1. WHAT TWO WORDS, WHEN ADDED TOGETHER, CONTAIN THE MOST LETTERS? The answer was "Post Office", but we had some other great asnwers, including "Mail Box" which aligns with the spirit of the riddle.

2. THE MORE OF THESE YOU TAKE, THE MORE YOU LEAVE BEHIND WHAT ARE THEY? We had a TON of answers on this one, and great guesses. The answers was "Footsteps." The next best response (and the funniest) we had was "Poops", which we have to admit is true lol.

3. WHAT KIND OF ROOM HAS NO DOORS, WALLS, OR WINDOWS? Answer- a mushROOM. The second best answer we heard (and also accepted) was a bROOM.

Thanks for playing!

Preliminary results:

Wow! What a night! A longer and more detailed post will come later today. For now, please see below for our Top 3 Male and Female!

Female
1st- Emily Barrineau-Spencer- 101.25
2nd- Andrea McHugh- 85.5
3rd- Lorraine Rollins- 76.25

Male
1st- Patrick Eberhart- 141
2nd- Matthew Greschak- 100
3rd- Jeff Jordan- 97

The night was challenging, and the weather proved daunting for several hours of trail running. However, we still had dozens on amazing performances by the time 7AM came around!

One of those performances was Patrick Eberhart. He remained unbreakable through every loop he ran, finishing with a course record AND a new overall record for most miles run in a single day in Virginia.

Congrats to all!
