Freekind - VA Freekind exists to prevent human trafficking in our communities and support survivors on their journey to freedom. Awareness - Prevention - Survivor Empowerment

Freekind™ is dedicated to providing survivors of human trafficking the support they need to recover from the trauma they’ve experienced. More than that, we unleash the power of kindness to help restore the humanity stolen from them, offering grace to the most vulnerable in our communities as they regain their freedom, their sense of hope, and their sense of belonging. Freekind™ exists to prevent human trafficking in our communities and to support those who have been exploited on their journey to freedom. Established in 2012, and formerly known as Virginia Beach Justice Initiative, the organization began with a focus on legislative advocacy and raising awareness of human trafficking in the Hampton Roads area. While we continue to raise awareness, our focus is on identifying victims of human trafficking who have had their freedom stolen and helping them on their journey to recovery and restoration. We also provide industry-specific training to equip the criminal justice system, businesses, healthcare providers and others to see through the eyes of the victim. And because so many of the clients we serve experienced abuse in their childhood, opening up a vulnerability that their trafficker preyed on, we offer an SOL-compliant prevention education curriculum designed for middle and high school students. Today, Freekind works with more than 140 survivors who have experienced sexual exploitation and partners with schools to bring prevention education to as many youth as possible.

Ready to learn, grow, and make a difference?

Registration is open for Freekind’s upcoming Survivor Advocacy Training—designed for those who want to deepen their understanding of human trafficking and learn how to better support survivors.

Whether you’re looking for professional development or interested in becoming a Volunteer Survivor Advocate with Freekind, this training offers an opportunity to build knowledge, skills, and confidence to advocate with compassion and care.

📅 Training begins: Tuesday, February 23, 2027

💻 Format: Primarily live online evening sessions via Microsoft Teams, with 1 in-person session.

💰 Cost: $300 (discount available for those planning to become Volunteer Survivor Advocates with Freekind)

Participants will need reliable internet access and a device with a camera that supports Microsoft Teams.

Today is the International Day of Non-Violence. ✨

For us at Freekind, this day is a reminder that ending violence takes more than awareness, it takes all of us choosing to act.

Human trafficking is a form of violence that can impact every part of a survivor’s life: physically, emotionally, economically, and systemically. Non-violence means more than the absence of harm. It means creating communities where every person is treated with dignity, respect, and compassion and where everyone has the opportunity to live in freedom.

Today, we honor survivors who have endured violence and continue to choose courage. We also invite our community to move from awareness to action:

➡️ Learn. Understand human trafficking and the systems that allow exploitation to thrive.

➡️ Support. Show up for survivors and organizations working to create lasting change.

➡️ Act. Speak up, get involved, and help build safer communities where violence and exploitation are not normalized.

At Freekind, we believe creating a world of freedom starts with each of us. It’s choosing to advocate, choosing to intervene, and choosing to treat every person with dignity and compassion.

We’re so proud of the incredible individuals who recently completed our 8-week Offramps jail program. Their strength, courage, and perseverance throughout this journey are truly inspiring. We’re honored to celebrate this accomplishment with them!

A special thank you to our volunteer Survivor Advocates who generously gave their time to facilitate and instruct classes. Your dedication helps create meaningful opportunities for healing, hope, and change.

We’re also grateful to Norfolk Jail for partnering with Freekind to bring our Offramps program to their facility, helping provide awareness, resources, and pathways toward freedom for criminalized survivors of human trafficking.

Together, we can create spaces where survivors experience freedom, hope, and belonging.
