On the 53rd anniversary of Earth Day, Swamp Thing reminds us that technically speaking, Earth Day is Every Day!

That said, in honor of this important moment, it seems fitting here to share information about a Swamp Thing priority:

Here’s to the land of the longleaf pine…Where once there were flowers, trees, and shrubs, and homes to turtles, birds, and mammals, Swamp Thing finds only wrack and ruin of human piggishness, conducted for replacement with car washes, storage units, pavement, and toxic stormwater lagoons. Destroying long-lived forests for short-term economic gain is the opposite of what our Grandchildren need us to do right now—for the sake of their climate future.

Species survival is no longer just about panda bears, coral reefs, or Venus’ flytraps. Like it or not, our species’ common objective needs to be reduced resource consumption, with true emphasis on responsibly managing the finite and diminishing natural resources our starship planet has to offer. This especially applies to finite natural forests that are our global life support system (HVAC).

Hi All,

I’m sure everyone is being bombarded by Giving Tuesday posts today, and we are going to add to that.

CPCG has had some major successes the past few years from snails to woodpeckers. We may have been founded 10 years ago, but our efforts began in 1992 bringing the Magnificent Ramshorn into captivity and then the Greenfield Ramshorn in the early 2000s. Today we are looking to revitalize our modest facility with some major improvements and upgrades to support the snails.

Our goal is to raise $5,000 dollars to make that happen!

Please consider donating to us today, all donations are tax deductible as we are a registered 501c3 non profit.

Thank You!

With a donation to CPCG you become a part of this grassroots movement to save endangered species native to North Carolina and work to protect our remaining natural spaces. Howdy Folks,

Please see our petition and consider signing to help our friend the Magnificent Ramshorn get the federal listing it has needed for 30 years!

The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service is accepting public comment on the snails' proposed listing. CPCG has made it easy for you to play an important part in the process.

Once again we are protecting our snails from the threat of saltwater that will be coming from Hurricane Ian. Now a well practiced tradition come hurricane season and part of husbandry that’s kept these species viable in captivity for 30 years.

We are so close to finally having federal protections for our flagship species! Thanks to everyone that has supported us over the years, our small (family) team kept this species and it’s cousin the Greenfield Ramshorn from extinction!

These snails are now extinct in the wild

This is heartening news for residents in and around Lumberton, NC, whose air will be cleaner absent a polluting wood pellet plant. It's also good news for our climate, forests, and biodiversity, the latter including our own species!

CHAPEL HILL, NC — Facing ongoing problems and legal action against unpermitted pollution at its Lumberton NC facility, today Active Energy Group announced an agreement to sell the site, ending plans to build a controversial wood pellet facility. For the past two years, Active Energy had moved forw...

Following a wintery icy-rain event in southeast North Carolina, Swamp Thing stepped into the 25 degree morning air enveloping a longleaf pine savanna, to observe icing on blades of wire grass and the bud-tipped stem of a turkey oak.

2021 fading into sunset in a longleaf pine savanna. Here’s to making scientific learning fashionable in 2022; the year when environmental awareness, understanding, and appreciation, leads to mature social behavior, responsible natural resource management, and honest ecological accounting, with the unified goal to safely restore the living life support system of Starship Earth!
