Juneteenth is a day to honor June 19, 1865, when freedom finally reached enslaved people in Galveston, Texas—more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. It’s a moment in history that continues to inspire reflection, resilience, and celebration within Black communities across the country.

As a nonprofit serving survivors in Pender and Duplin counties, we value this day as a reminder of the ongoing work toward justice, safety, and equity for all.

In observance of Juneteenth, Safe Haven Empowerment Center will be closed on June 19. Our team will return on Monday, June 22. We hope you take time to honor the meaning and legacy of this day.

Every June 14, we take a moment to honor the Stars and Stripes for Flag Day. It’s a great reminder of the history, perseverance, and shared identity represented in our nation’s flag.

To celebrate, our team at Safe Haven of Pender is sharing a few fun pieces of flag history you may not know:

• The current 50-star design was created by a 17-year-old student in 1958 and later selected by President Eisenhower.
• The United States has had 27 official flag versions, most updated when new states joined the Union.
• Red, white, and blue were chosen to symbolize hardiness, purity, and justice.
• Six American flags have been placed on the moon during the Apollo missions.
• Today’s design is the longest-running version in U.S. history.

We’re grateful to live in a community that values history, unity, and resilience—values that guide our work supporting survivors across Pender and Duplin counties.
