Under the plan Pender's school board reviewed Wednesday, all five buildings stay: two become ninth grade classrooms, and one becomes a career training wing with agriscience, health science, public safety and four computer science rooms. The board didn't vote. It tabled the decision to September 1, which is the first meeting where parents can actually speak.

Pender County Schools redistricting is underway and new attendance lines across the Topsail area take effect in fall 2027. Parent input opens mid-September before the board votes in January.

New attendance lines take effect August 2027. A priorities survey goes live in mid-September, information sessions follow a few weeks later, and after the December presentation the conversation is between the consultants and the board.

Pender's school board picks a design Wednesday for the $22 million project that expands Topsail High into the Topsail Middle building next door. That money is part of the $178 million school bond voters approved back in 2022 to deal with overcrowding.

A public meeting will be held Wednesday morning at 9AM in Burgaw.

Topsail High is 483 students over capacity. When 830 middle schoolers leave for J.H. Lea in 2027-28, their building becomes high school space. Three teams pitched everything from a refresh to demolition, and the board picks one Wednesday.

One South Topsail classroom will be sealed when doors open tomorrow morning. Is it mold? Not confirmed. The district has only confirmed mold-like growth at C.F. Pope in Burgaw, and hasn't said what testing found in Hampstead, or why South Topsail was tested at all.

What parents should know tonight:

Not confirmed. Pender County Schools sealed a South Topsail classroom for more cleaning and air testing days before school starts, and has not said why.

Hampstead could finally get its own emergency room. Novant filed state paperwork Monday for a freestanding ER near US 17 and NC 210: eight rooms, imaging, open 24/7, targeting 2029 if the state approves it.

I pulled the state's application log instead of working from the press release, and it holds two things nobody else has reported. The building itself is a $15 million project (the $50 million figure going around is a different commitment), and there is a written comment window that closes October 1 if you want a formal say.

One thing I could not pin down: which intersection. US 17 and NC 210 meet twice, once in central Hampstead and again about nine miles north at the Surf City split, and Novant has not named the parcel. One reading puts the new ER 5.4 miles from the Scotts Hill emergency room. Where do you think it lands?
