Two sewer and wastewater decisions for Topsail Township are back before Pender County commissioners Monday night, two weeks after only two commissioners made it to the Sept 21 meeting and nothing could be voted on.

On December 1, a pedal-assist e-bike that hits 28 mph stops being a moped in NC, so riders of any age can use one with no license, registration or insurance, just a helmet if they're under 18.

Surf City is drafting its own rules before then, and an August staff draft would lift the town's ban on e-bikes on sidewalks and the bridge path while setting a 10 mph limit across the bridge. What changes, what the town code says today, and what happens after a crash:

Topsail parents: the Pender County Schools priorities survey closes Friday, September 18. Under two weeks, and it is the input that shapes attendance lines for where your children will attend schools for the 2027-28 academic year.

If you have students 13+ in the area, they can participate, too.

Before you open it, know that it does not start with maps. It asks what challenges the district should address, what values should guide the planning, and how to rank possible solutions against both.

Pender County is redrawing school attendance lines for 2027-28. The district says community priorities guide where they land. The survey closes September 18.

The state has funded the Scotts Hill trailhead at the maximum PARTF award value, and now Pender County has to match it. We read the grant paperwork to give a glimpse into what the future park will offer local residents.

Pender County won the maximum $500,000 PARTF grant for the Abbey Nature Preserve Trailhead in Scotts Hill. County records show $335,998 toward the match.

If Surf City Rocks has been on your list, find a way to get there soon. We did the morning of their soft opening, and it was a blast.

A bucket of sand, a screen, running water... and you leave with a bag full. Ours had shark teeth, arrowheads, fool's gold, and a geode to break open at home.

The shop behind the experience is far bigger than it looks from US 17, and packed with interesting and beautiful finds. Check out our full photo tour in the post, but know before you go -- you'll want your own bucket!

Topsail Middle isn't being torn down. Under the plan Pender's school board reviewed Wednesday, all five buildings stay: two become ninth grade classrooms, and one becomes a career training wing with agriscience, health science, public safety and four computer science rooms. The board didn't vote. It tabled the decision to September 1, which is the first meeting where parents can actually speak.

Pender County Schools redistricting is underway and new attendance lines across the Topsail area take effect in fall 2027. Parent input opens mid-September before the board votes in January.

Pender's school board picks a design Wednesday for the $22 million project that expands Topsail High into the Topsail Middle building next door. That money is part of the $178 million school bond voters approved back in 2022 to deal with overcrowding.

A public meeting will be held Wednesday morning at 9AM in Burgaw.

Topsail High is 483 students over capacity. When 830 middle schoolers leave for J.H. Lea in 2027-28, their building becomes high school space. Three teams pitched everything from a refresh to demolition, and the board picks one Wednesday.

One South Topsail classroom will be sealed when doors open tomorrow morning. Is it mold? Not confirmed. The district has only confirmed mold-like growth at C.F. Pope in Burgaw, and hasn't said what testing found in Hampstead, or why South Topsail was tested at all.

What parents should know tonight:

Not confirmed. Pender County Schools sealed a South Topsail classroom for more cleaning and air testing days before school starts, and has not said why.
