Today, June 14, is Flag Day, commemorating the adoption of the flag of the United States on June 14, 1777 by resolution of the Second Continental Congress.

Additionally, today is also the anniversary of the founding of the Continental Army, formed on June 14, 1775 by a resolution also passed by the Second Continental Congress which met in Philadelphia after the war's outbreak at the Battles of Lexington and Concord. The Continental Army was succeeded in 1784 by the United States Army, which celebrates its birthday today.

Coincidentally, on June 14, 1953, Army PFC John F. Bruno was killed in action in Korea. He was laid to rest a few months later in the family mausoleum in Oak Grove Cemetery, and his parents – together with Veterans of Foreign Wars Passalaqua Post 1026 – erected a monument in his memory on our grounds. That monument is now the centerpiece of our Veterans Memorial, which was dedicated on Armed Forces Day in 2025.

We would like to extend a special thank-you to VFW post #1026 Chaplain John DeLucca for donating a new flag for the Memorial in time for Flag Day.

We would also like to reiterate our gratitude to the Knights of Columbus Villa Marie Council # 6342 for allowing us the honor of hosting the Flags For Forgotten Soldiers display in time for Flag Day; the display will be up for all to see through mid-July.

On Thursday, June 11, members of the Knights of Columbus Villa Marie Council # 6342, local veterans, Councilman Anthony Marino and Councilman JD Calderone (who was presented with a certificate of appreciation) met at Oak Grove Cemetery to install the Flags For Forgotten Soldiers display along the White Horse Pike.

Flags for Forgotten Soldiers began following the death of U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Joshua Berry, who was injured in a shooting at Fort Hood in 2009; following four years of anxiety and post-traumatic stress order, he took his life in 2013.

Berry’s father, Howard, started the program in 2017 to raise awareness to the amount of veteran suicides.

This display features 660 American flags representing the number of active service members and veterans who die by their own hand each month.

All of us at Oak Grove Cemetery is deeply honored to host the display, which will remain on our grounds through mid-July.

Good afternoon!

We are pleased to inform you that, after several unexpected equipment issues, our lawnmower was returned to us this morning fully repaired and ready to go!

While we were not able to mow the remainder of the overgrown sections today, we did make several passes around each section to better facilitate parking when you visit your loved ones this weekend.

We will resume mowing on Monday, and we thank you for your patience!

Today, on International Firefighters' Day, we spotlight Henry M. Phillips, one of the founders of the Independent Volunteer Fire Company (Hammonton Fire Company No. 2), and who served as chief of the Hammonton Fire Department for 50 years. Mr. Phillips also served as our president for several decades and is one of our honored residents--as are many of his compatriots.

Good afternoon!

Some of you may have noticed that the grass is a tad overgrown in some areas of the cemetery. We have been experiencing a surprising number of equipment issues, but expect to be able to begin to address it on Monday.

Also, seasonal stone-cleaning is expected to begin in June. If anyone has a specific request, please email the office at [email protected] and they will be prioritized.

Thank you!

Today, Honors Biology students from Hammonton High School (under the tutelage of Mrs. Amy Taylor and her three children) are visiting Oak Grove Cemetery in observance of both Earth Day yesterday and Take Your Child to Work Day today. As they visit, they are practicing using binoculars and the Merlin App to try to identify some birds and enjoy time outside for Earth Day.

Last year, Mrs. Taylor's students visited to participate in the World Series of Birding: Minor League Edition, and are looking forward to doing so again this year!

Good afternoon!

This past Friday, April 10, we began the process of charging and testing the cemetery’s water lines. Unsurprisingly (given the harsh winter), we discovered a massive break in the main across from our building.

We have begun to effect repairs; however, given the age of the line and the unusual configuration of the break, it is taking longer than expected.

We will update you when repairs are complete.

In the meantime, please exercise caution when driving near the building.

Thank you.
