Here are some questions we've received!
What version are we doing? - We are doing the RSC version with rights owned by Concord Theatricals. This is the version that is closest to the 1939 film.
Do I need to come to multiple nights of auditions? - Coming to multiple nights of auditions will not increase your chances of being cast. You only need to come to one night. However, if you want to spend more time with theatre people, you are welcome to come to as many nights as you wish.
Will there be double casting? - Probably. We are not going to do two full shows this year, but in order to continue our work having seasoned cast work with newer cast, depending on numbers at auditions, it is likely that we will have two casts, one with predominantly younger leads and one with experienced leads. The younger leads would perform for a Wednesday night family and friends open final dress as well as the Friday night show and the Sunday Matinee. The experienced cast would perform on the official Thursday opening night performance as well as both Saturday performances. This is subject to change based on numbers at auditions, but each lead role will be able to perform at least 3 times. If we end up single casting the show, we will adjust and not have an open final dress on the Wednesday. There will be no hard age cutoffs between the two casts. Flying monkeys, featured dancers, munchkins, and other roles will remain consistent between the two casts.
What to expect at auditions -
If you are auditioning for a singing role, please prepare an approximately 2 minute audition song with karaoke track. In order to keep auditions moving, we will have to cut you off after about 2 minutes, so if you need to start mid-song, make sure you know the time stamp of the track.
If you are auditioning for a non-singing speaking role, you do not need to sing, but you are always more than welcome to. We will have scene selections available for cold readings.
If you are a child planning to audition for a munchkin, baby flying monkey, or Toto, please come dressed in clothes you can move in. We will give you some directions to play pretend (Show me how you beg for food as a dog. What is your scariest flying Monkey face, can you show me how you hide when you're scared etc.) and we may have a short dance piece for you to try. Please also plan to sing a short song if you want to be considered for a Munchkin solo! Twinkle Twinkle Little Star or Happy Birthday is fine, or you can do a 2 minute song selection - your choice!
If you are auditioning for a Featured Dance role (Jitterbugs, The Tornado, Primary Flying Monkeys, and possibly more), you are welcome to submit a dance audition video or perform a short (no more than 2 minutes) choreographed piece or demonstrate specific tumbling capabilities. Please note, we will not have mats or special dance flooring, please be safe.
There will also be a short choreography section of audtions for those interested in being considered for roles that involve dance. If you are looking to be considered for Dorothy, Scarecrow, Tin Woodsman, Lion, Glinda, or featured dancer roles, you will need to participate in the Choreography section of auditions.
