President John F. Kennedy established National Police Week and Peace Officers Memorial Day in 1962 to honor law enforcement, which is frequently commemorated by local "Respect for Law" events. While JFK founded National Police Week, the specific "Respect for Law" initiative originated in July 1965 from a discussion between former FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover and Past Optimist International President Carl Bowen. Our club carried on this Optimist International tradition at our latest members' meeting. We welcomed several members of the Hammond Indiana Police Department and gave special honors to 2 of them. Captain Ezekiel Hinojosa is retiring after 47 years of protecting and serving the citizens of Hammond. Enjoy your retirement! We also named Officer Bryce Scherwin as the 2026 Hammond Optimist Club Police Officer of Year. Officer Scherwin was involved in the investigation and apprehension of a number of high profile cases in the last year. We'd also like to thank all those who bravely wear the uniform, both past and present.
