The City of Hammond's Community Development Department has an impactful resource to share with residents recovering from the August 11th storm!

The City of Hammond Homeowner Emergency Repair Program allows income-qualified residents to apply for a loan of up to $5,000 for emergency repairs whenever a threat to life or safety exists. It is important to note that this resource is provided on a first-come, first-served basis, and completing the application process does not guarantee the loan will be granted.

The "Storm Recovery Resources" section that is located on the homepage of www.gohammond.com has a link to the Homeowner Emergency Repair Program's guidelines, checklist, and application.

Any additional questions should be directed to the City of Hammond's Community Development Department by calling 219-853-6371 or emailing Director Owana Miller at [email protected].

🚨 PLEASE BE CAREFUL, NWI COMMUNITY! 🚨

Due to the unforeseen circumstances our community has been experiencing, we are unfortunately seeing more and more people trying to take advantage of families who are already struggling.

Some families have been without power for over a week and are desperately looking for places to stay, repairs, cleanup services, contractors, supplies, and other help. Sadly, scammers know people are in a hurry and are using that desperation as an opportunity to make money. 💔

⚠️ PLEASE DO YOUR RESEARCH BEFORE SENDING ANY MONEY!

Whether you are:

• Hiring a contractor or repair person

• Renting a room, hotel, or temporary place to stay

• Paying someone for cleanup or tree removal

• Purchasing supplies or equipment

• Paying a deposit for any type of service

Verify who you are dealing with FIRST.

Some people are claiming to be contractors when they are not legitimate contractors at all. Ask for business information, references, proof of insurance or licensing when applicable, and look up the company before handing over money.

🚫 We strongly recommend NOT giving a deposit until you have done your research and feel confident the person or company is legitimate.

Research may only take 5 minutes, but those 5 minutes could save you hundreds or even thousands of dollars.

I would rather spend a few extra minutes researching than lose money that my family desperately needs right now.

❤️ Please look out for one another. Share information, warn your neighbors, check on your family members, and especially help protect our elderly and vulnerable community members.

NWI STRONG means looking out for each other. 💪❤️

Please share this post so we can help prevent another family from becoming a victim.

SCAM ALERT – BE CAUTIOUS OF CALLERS CLAIMING TO BE FROM NIPSCO

The Hammond Police Department is advising residents to be extremely vigilant when receiving phone calls from individuals claiming to represent NIPSCO.

Scammers are currently attempting to steal personal and identifying information by posing as utility representatives.

Please remember:

• If you receive a call or recording asking you to purchase gift cards or other items as a form of payment, hang up immediately.
• Do not provide Social Security numbers, banking information, credit card numbers, passwords, or other identifying information to an unsolicited caller.
• If you are unsure whether a call is legitimate, hang up and independently verify NIPSCO’s phone number before calling back. Do not simply redial the number that appeared on your caller ID or use a number provided by the caller.
• Never allow a caller to pressure or frighten you into making an immediate payment.

Scammers can make phone calls appear very convincing, and caller ID information can be manipulated to make it look as though the call is coming from a legitimate company.

Please be especially cautious and share this information with family members, friends, and neighbors who may be vulnerable to these scams.

If you believe you have been the victim of a scam or have provided personal or financial information to a scammer, contact police immediately.

Thank you, stay vigilant, and be safe.
