Firefighter cyclists from across the country stopped in Hammond to visit our memorial and eat some Schoops. Bay to Brooklyn is a memorial bicycle ride from the San Francisco Bay Area to Brooklyn honoring the 343 firefighters who died on 9/11. Hammond Firefighters Local 556 paid for their lunch and showed appreciation for making a stop with us.

Indiana Homeland Security site is back up and running.

🚨 UPDATED STATE DISASTER RELIEF FUND APPLICATION INFORMATION 🚨

Residents who have experienced difficulty accessing the State Disaster Relief Fund application can now access it through the Indiana Department of Homeland Security’s August 2026 Disaster Resource Hub.

Visit https://on.in.gov/August2026Disaster, scroll to “SDRF Application Information,” and select the “Apply Here: SDRF Application” button.

The Indiana Department of Homeland Security's website states:
If your primary residence has been impacted by the Aug. 11, 2026, disaster (E.O. 26-21), you may qualify for an individual assistance grant. However, please be aware, assistance under this program is limited to uninsured damages of eligible items occurring at your primary residence, if located in a jurisdiction that has issued a local disaster declaration and for which state assistance is necessary. Eligible items include certain home repairs, essential furnishings, essential appliances, essential tools, debris removal, medical devices, and essential transportation. ⚠️ REGIONAL MESSAGE: REPORT ALL STORM DAMAGE TO INDIANA 211 — THIS IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT

If your home or property sustained ANY damage from the severe weather beginning August 11, please report it to Indiana 211.

The Indiana Department of Homeland Security (IDHS) says Indiana 211 is currently accepting damage reports for:

Dearborn, Delaware, Fayette, Franklin, Hamilton, Henry, Lake, LaPorte, Madison, Newton, Pike, Porter, Pulaski, Randolph and Wayne counties.

For Northwest Indiana, this includes Lake, LaPorte, Newton and Porter counties.

WHY THIS MATTERS

According to Indiana Homeland Security, collecting these reports will help establish a comprehensive assessment of the damage, allow IDHS to determine damage estimates and help officials develop the next course of action in the disaster recovery process.

In simple terms: WE NEED TO DOCUMENT WHAT HAPPENED HERE.

These assessments help state and federal officials understand the magnitude of the disaster, what our communities need, where resources need to be allocated and what additional state or potential federal assistance may be warranted.

This is especially important right now because Northwest Indiana is not the only part of the state dealing with a major disaster. Central Indiana is also experiencing catastrophic flooding, and those communities are reporting their damage and needs through 211.

When officials begin looking at damage across Indiana, Northwest Indiana needs to have an accurate accounting of what happened here.

Please don’t assume your damage is too small to report.

REPORT IT.

That includes:

* Trees falling on homes, garages or other structures

* Roof, siding and structural damage

* Flooding and basement water damage

* Damaged vehicles and personal property

* Significant tree and debris damage

* Other storm-related property damage or losses

Even if you have already contacted your insurance company, city or town, submit your damage through Indiana 211 as well so it becomes part of the statewide assessment.

Residents who need assistance should also use 211. Older adults, individuals with disabilities, Veterans and other at-risk residents are especially encouraged to report their needs. Depending on eligibility and availability, 211 may also help connect residents with organizations providing storm-recovery assistance.

This isn’t just about asking for help today. It’s about documenting the magnitude of this disaster so Northwest Indiana’s needs are represented during the recovery process.

Every legitimate damage report contributes to that overall picture.

HAPPENING TODAY, SUN., AUG. 16TH‼️🚨

NIPSCO is collaborating with the City of Hammond to host a community event providing residents with FREE lunch and dinner at the Hammond Sportsplex (6630 Indianapolis Blvd, Hammond).

The event runs from 12 PM to 6 PM, with lunch being served at 12 PM and dinner being served at 4:30 PM. First come, first served, while supplies last!
