Yesterday we lost a legendary labor leader from Indiana. This man served in the military, served his community, and pushed the labor movement for many decades. We will miss you Tommy.

🙏 The IAFF is saddened to announce the passing of General Secretary-Treasurer Emeritus Thomas H. “Tommy” Miller.

A second-generation fire fighter, Navy veteran, and lifelong union leader, Tommy served 37 years with the Indianapolis Fire Department. He went on to serve as president of the Professional Fire Fighters Union of Indiana, IAFF 8th District vice president, and General Secretary-Treasurer from 2010 until his retirement in 2016.

Tommy said he wanted to be remembered as someone who helped people. Across nearly five decades of service to our union, he did exactly that – improving the lives of countless fire fighters, retirees, and their families.

Our thoughts are with his wife, Barb; their children, Stephanie, Thomas, Joseph (Madison), and Claire; his grandson, Benjamin; and all who knew and loved him.

Hammond Firefighters agree with the statement.

"While municipal grants are helpful, NIPSCO must dedicate substantial funding to address the growing hazard of downed wires. As the 1st District Vice-President of the Professional Firefighters Union of Indiana, I hear constant concerns from the 22 departments I represent. Thousands of emergency service hours are currently wasted guarding NIPSCO's downed lines.
​Our municipalities need a true collaborative effort to ensure local emergency response isn't compromised elsewhere while waiting on NIPSCO. Working together now is far better than fighting over legislative mandates later.

This Labor Day, we recognize the strength, resilience, and dedication of American workers.

Across Indiana, our fire fighters, EMTs, paramedics, and 911 Telecommunicators stand shoulder to shoulder every day, answering the call and protecting their communities with courage and compassion.

Their commitment to serving others represents the true spirit of labor: strength in service and unity in purpose.

Happy Labor Day to all who work hard to make our communities stronger.

Do not give to scam organizations pretending to be your local fire department. The Hammond Fire Department and Hammond Firefighters Local 556 hold actual in-person events or golf outings. We do not solicit by mass letters or phone calls. The same scam is happening throughout NWi as of late and seems to resurface every few years. Tell them to get bent!

SCAM ALERT

The Hobart Fire Department has been made aware of fraudulent donation requests claiming to be on behalf of our department.

Neither the Hobart Fire Department nor our firefighters’ union is calling, mailing, or soliciting residents for donations. Any legitimate fundraisers or sponsorship opportunities will be shared through our official social media pages.

If you receive a suspicious call, letter, or visit requesting donations on our behalf, do not provide money or personal information and report it to the Hobart Police Department. You can also always contact the Hobart Fire Department directly to confirm whether a request is legitimate before donating.

Firefighter cyclists from across the country stopped in Hammond to visit our memorial and eat some Schoops. Bay to Brooklyn is a memorial bicycle ride from the San Francisco Bay Area to Brooklyn honoring the 343 firefighters who died on 9/11. Hammond Firefighters Local 556 paid for their lunch and showed appreciation for making a stop with us.
