I was at work talking with one of the children. She tells me about a time that she remembers that a situation happened and her grandmother asked her afterwards was she embarrassed? She said, I told her no at the time but now that I think about it, I think I was.
I began to think about times in my childhood that I felt embarrassed.
I remember being young and my mother would say wherever you cut up at is where I will embarrass you at. Does this sound familiar to any one?
I began to think as I talked with her a little more, "Lord what could be the lasting effects of an embarrassing moment? and how do you help a child that is carrying trauma from embarrassment?
I know we had all had embarrassing moments and most likely we will have more in our lifetimes as well as our children but I do not agree with using embarrassment as a tactic to control undesirable behavior. Embarrassment is sure to happen but I think how we cope with it in those moments is what helps us and our children succeed in life when it happens again.
