The Northeast Trails Alliance has been working hard in the year since we met last. Our conservation staff was out on the Roanoke River on a sunny summer day, searching for submerged aquatic vegetation when, suddenly, dolphins appeared!🌞🐬 At first, everyone was thrilled — but that excitement quickly turned into concern. Dolphins are a saltwater species, and seeing them this far upriver is extremely rare. Historically, it would take years for saltwater to reach this far into the Roanoke, but the extreme drought has accelerated saltwater intrusion and stressed the entire ecosystem.

The bald cypress found in this area are freshwater trees, and these new conditions put them at real risk. Aaron Bunch, Freshwater Specialist, is working to understand how these changes are affecting the system and how we can best manage the river to keep it healthy and functioning into the future.
