Steamer Bertie is seen here on the Roanoke River, 22 December 1888.

This steamer, operated by Captain Wilbur F. Askew, was vital for the coastal residents along the Cashie and Roanoke Rivers. Since the railroad network hadn't been extended that far east; goods, mail and passengers arrived and departed by steamer.

Captain Askew was well-known and regarded in eastern counties. His obituary in 1905 described him as "a genial, jolly, master of his vessel, free and easy with passengers and especially fond of young people." In his career, he was also captain of the Kalula, Tahoma and McCall steamers.
