Want to introduce your dog to birds? Want to work with your dog on specific hunting skills? Want to get ready for ESAA and/or AKC hunting dog tests or field trials? Want to just get out of the house and give your dog a chance to exercise? Want to shoot a few quail?
Join us for a training day at the Highland Field Trial Grounds, Silo Course, Highland, MI, on Saturday, August 9. Quail will be available at a cost of $8.00 per bird provided that they are ordered in advance. Training gear necessary for a productive training session (bird bags, check cords, tip-up traps, blank pistols, stock tanks, extra hands, experienced club members, AKC qualified judges, steady brace mates for introducing and/or practicing backing/honoring, gunners, etc.) will be available. Also feel free to bring your own gear which will enable more people to train at the same time.
Call / e-mail Ray McVeigh (517) 515-2299 or [email protected] or Bruce Arnold (810) 599-6636 or [email protected] before COB Wednesday, August 6, 2025 to sign up and order quail. We will want to know the # of quail you would like, and whether you have any puppies or novice gun dogs that have not yet experienced gun fire and preferred time slot (half hour increments starting at 7:30 or 8:00 a.m., if warranted).
Coffee and donuts will be available in the morning. Depending on how many people sign up, we may either (a) gather for lunch at Sparkies (M-59 and Duck Lake Road) or (b) order pizzas, salads, etc. for delivery at the grounds. Afterwards, any hard-core people may go back to the Silo course for additional training, etc., since we have reserved the Silo course for the entire day.
Be sure to bring potable water for your dogs and yourself. (The hand-pump has a history of “unreliability”). Chairs are always a good idea too. But most of all bring your happy face and wagging tails for a day of fun! Ticks are quite prevalent this year so apply your preventative of choice (for both humans and canines)!
Please bring your own “quail transportation” devices....if you wish /order “take-home” birds.
“Official” Highland burr / stick-tite / “greenie” removal tools will be available for trial / purchase....(you all know they work!!!)
MI recreation passport went up in price for 2023 to $13.00 for residents and $39.00 for non-residents….good for 12 months!
