Welcome Spinach & Turnip
Everyone, meet our newest little arrivals — Spinach and Turnip!
These tiny babies came into our care yesterday morning, and while they're both absolutely adorable, they each have some challenges ahead of them.
Spinach (the gorgeous gray girl) has a very unusual, stumbly walk and has experienced a couple of seizures since arriving. At this point, we are going to begin treatment for toxoplasmosis, a parasite that can sometimes cause neurological symptoms in kittens. Her brother will be treated as well as a precaution. We are hopeful that treatment will help, but if we don't see improvement, we will begin further diagnostics to determine exactly what's causing her neurological issues.
Turnip is a special little guy with a condition called microphthalmia, which means one or both of his eyes did not develop normally and are smaller than they should be. Because of this, he appears to have very limited vision. Right now, we're monitoring him closely, but our veterinarian believes there is a possibility that his eyes may need to be surgically closed when he's older if they continue to develop recurring infections or become painful. Some microphthalmia cats do very well without surgery—just like our own special boy, Spalax—so only time will tell what will be best for sweet Turnip.
For now, these two are settling in, getting lots of love, and receiving the care they need. Please keep them in your thoughts as we learn more about Spinach's neurological issues and watch Turnip grow.
Welcome to the rescue, little ones. We promise to do everything we can for you both.
