This is baby Lucas and his story. I would love to have a good turnout for the event!

Lucas is 7 1/2 months old! At 2 1/2 months old we went to Helen Keller ER for what we thought was seizure like activity and some reflux, during that stay he had a lumbar puncture and stopped breathing and was flown to Children’s in Birmingham. He stopped breathing multiple times during our 107 day stay there. On March 1st, he was emergently intubated. Once he was stable he went for an MRI of his brain and spine and his tube was misplaced and his heart stopped. He required six minutes of CPR and was intubated again. Over the course of the next week he was extubated and reintubated again and it was determined that his diaphragm was partially paralyzed and that’s why he was having such a hard time breathing in his own. So on March 14th, Lucas got his tracheostomy and g-tube. He is 24/7 dependent on his ventilator! At around 3 1/2 months old he was diagnosed with SMARD. Spinal Muscle Atrophy with Respiratory Distress. There are less than 100 cases worldwide and there is currently no treatment or cure, but there is a clinical trial in place! We’re hoping we will see success in that and drug options will be available in the next year or so to help slow disease progression. Lucas can’t move his legs very well, he has very weak core and neck muscles, and cannot breathe on his own. But even with all of this, he continues to smile and be such a happy baby! We are so thankful for this benefit and everyone’s support. We cannot thank each and every one of you enough!! 💙
