“THE GREENEST BUILDING IS THE ONE ALREADY BUILT,” —coined by architect Carl Elefante—provides a concise argument for adaptive reuse of historic buildings. This concept emerged during the energy crisis of the 1970s and, as a result, phrases like “carbon footprint” and “embodied energy” became part of the preservation vocabulary. In the 1980s, the National Trust for Historic Preservation () created this famous poster of an old building in the shape of a gas can to convey that building reuse was a good way to conserve energy. Indeed, historic preservation is the very definition of sustainability—a smart, efficient way to reuse a community's resources and keep its character at the same time. Explore the greener side of preservation and learn how history, sustainability, fairness, and economic vitality can all go hand in hand in these “Green Stories.” https://savingplaces.org/story-categories/green-stories #.YFjiXGRueqA

Good News Everyone. The Parks and Recreation Board today approved the acquisition of .9 acres of land to be acquired from the Fort Owen Ranch for the purpose of developing a parking lot to improve public access and use of the Park. They also approved State Parks moving forward with the environmental analysis process to decide on a site plan for this new land to include a parking area, turnaround, fencing and pedestrian walkway from the new parking area to the park.

Thanks goes out to State Parks, the Board, and the owner of the ranch for working together to make this happen. It's a new day for Fort Owen State Park!!!!!
