Want to know more about data centers in NJ?

Join our Gateway Group this Thursday. Oct. 29th, at the Verona Park Boathouse for a membership meeting and presentation by NJ Sierra Club Director Anjuli Ramos and Chapter Organizer Maegan Kuhlmann. We will discuss the environmental and community impacts of data centers and what Sierra Club is doing at the state and local level to protect communities from uncontrolled development. ⚡️🌲

The meeting is open to Sierra Club members and the general public. We hope to see you there!

Yesterday, the Senate unamiously passed S4304 thanks to Senator Linda Greenstein, which prohibits data center developers from entering into non-disclosure agreements (NDAs) with municipalities. 🎉

Last night, our very own Conservation Program Manager, Taylor McFarland was awarded the Hometown Hero award from NJ/NY Baykeeper for her environmental advocacy. 🌊

Taylor has been as essential voice at the NJ Sierra Club for 9 years, fighting not only for conserving New Jersey’s open space, waters, wildlife, but also for safe and healthy communities. Over the years, Taylor has empowered volunteers to become their own environmental activists by equipping them with the grassroots tools and support to make real change at the local and state level.

She has fought pipelines, stood up to Big Oil and the plastic industry, protected public lands from the pines to the shore, stopped harmful developments, and more. Most recently, Taylor has played a vital role in protecting her hometown of Keyport by fighting for accountabilty and proper remediation of the Aeromarine site. 🌲

We couldn’t agree more with our partner NY/NJ Baykeeper that this award is more than well deserved - congratulations, Taylor! 🎉

A 40-megawatt, two-story data center near the Bell Works property in Holmdel was proposed to the Holmdel Planning board in July.

Bell Works is an important civic center to the community, not the appropriate location for an industrial data center! The site is directly adjacent to residential communities, a c-1 stream that feeds into a drinking water reservoir, and is expected to be powered by the local grid, further straining reliability, and backup dirty diesel generation that contributes to air and climate pollution. 💧

Last week, we joined over 300 community members from Kenilworth, Roselle, and Union at UCRAC’s Town Hall about the CoreWeave data center.

Attendees heard from Assemblyman Ed Rodriguez (LD 20), learned more about the data center in a presentation from UCRAC, and how to get engaged at the local level by voting and recalling the Kenilworth Council.

One week before NJ begins its bear hunt, the NJ Division of Fish and Wildlife announced that residents should properly store garbage and remove food sources to avoid attracting bears. 🐻

Last year, the state’s first segment of the bear hunt lasted a total of 6 days and over that time, there were 368 bears killed in NJ.

The state continues to fall short on the most effective tool we have to prevent conflicts: mandating bear-proof garbage containers in areas with a high population of bears. 🗑️
