We presented our George Prutky Vocational Service Award this morning to Jordan’s Relay, a nonprofit dedicated to preventing youth su***de.
This award is given each year to an organization dedicated to serving the community and comes with a $250 donation.
Jordan’s Relay has a two-fold mission to provide parents with actionable mental health resources and to bring peer-to-peer support programs into schools.
Accepting the award "for transforming loss into hope..." were Jordan’s Relay founder and president Erica Haller and managing director (and Rotarian) Ali Kloskowski.
Erica spoke to our club earlier this year and told us about losing her 20-year-old daughter Jordan to su***de. Today, she shared a compelling story of how her organization recently helped prevent a potential su***de in a Montgomery middle school.
“I know that the mother of that child is going to have a very different experience than I did and that is the only reason that we do what we do,” Erica said, her voice breaking.
The award is named for the late George Prutky, a club founder, who exemplified the values of Rotary in both his business and personal life.

This morning’s meeting had an all-Robbinsville flavor as we presented a special award, made an important donation, and scheduled volunteers for tomorrow’s Robbinsville Community Festival.
The second of our two annual Police Community Service Awards (Hamilton was May 30) was presented to Robbinsville Township Police Department Sgt. Wayne Haugh. The award came with a $500 donation to Robbinsville Twp PBA #344.
The plaque cited Sgt. Haugh’s specialized work with the Criminal Investigations and Traffic units, his expertise as an instructor, and his “steadfast commitment" to impaired driving enforcement, which has made a “profound and lasting impact on the safety of the residents of Robbinsville Township.”
Also this morning, Club President Stan Plytynski presented a $1,000 donation to Robbinsville Meals on Wheels.
Accepting the annual donation was Executive Director Jodi Marra, who thanked the club for supporting her volunteer organization that delivers meals Monday through Friday to homebound residents, helping them to remain independent, maintain nutritional health and live their lives with dignity.
Finally, the club finalized volunteers to staff our tent at the Robbinsville Community Festival tomorrow from 2 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at Robbinsville Community Park. Stop by, say hello and get a miniature flag as a reminder of this fall’s Flags for Heroes display.

A busy meeting yesterday as we awarded our Vern Applegate Community Service Award to Greenwood Elementary School EarlyAct advisor John Malloy, presented a scholarship award to Steinert senior Daniela Santoro, and learned of the inspiring work being done in Malawi by the Allentown non-profit Villages in Partnership.
John received his special award in honor of late member club member Vern Applegate for his work as our Rotary EarlyAct advisor at Greenwood, his 22-year teaching career, and his commitment to youth athletics. His award came with a $250 donation to a non-profit of his choice.
Daniela received a $1,000 Rotary scholarship in the name of another of our beloved late members, Jim DeBold, for her pursuit of sports public relations in her collegiate career that begins this fall at the University of Mississippi.
Finally, Rich Daesener, Director of Strategic Partnerships at Villages in Partnership (VIP) told us of his organization’s work in providing sustainable solutions to systemic poverty in the African country of Malawi. Fifth graders from Sayen Elementary School in Hamilton joined Rotary Club members in planting flowers today at Megan’s Place park.
The students planted 76 pink vincas and pink geraniums donated by Chris Ciaccio of Tony’s Farm & Garden Center on Route 130 North in Windsor.
Megan’s Place was created in honor of 7-year-old Megan Kanka of Hamilton who was murdered in 1994 in a former house on the site. The Rotary Club, then only two years in existence, raised funds to purchase the house, tear it down, and build the park in its place.
Each year, the club invites students from Megan’s former school to participate in activities at the park, which is located on Barbara Lee Drive in Hamilton.
A big thanks to Rotarians Greg Blair, who arranges the visits, Joe Cavone, who prepares the ground and flowers for planting, and Sharon Lucidi, who brings the snacks and water for the students. Rotarians Judy Goldstein and Tom Damm also participated today.
