May 17th is the anniversary of the landmark Brown v. Board of Education decision, which deemed racial segregation in U.S. public schools a violation of the Fourteenth Amendment — which established citizenship for everyone born in the United States, regardless of race.

We use this day to honor past organizers and activists, who worked tirelessly to gain the rights we have today, and to ground ourselves in the knowledge that we will win, as long as we keep fighting!

📢 Thank you so much to ! We had such an awesome time at this year’s MLK Day of Service and Celebration!

SEJ had the opportunity to lead a discussion circle where we asked people to consider this MLK quote:

“All too many of those who live in affluent America ignore those who exist in poor America; in doing so, the affluent Americans will eventually have to face themselves with the question that Eichmann chose to ignore: How responsible am I for the well-being of my fellows? To ignore evil is to become an accomplice to it.”

We urge you all to think about the question MLK asks us as we go through 2026. How responsible are we for the wellbeing of the greater community? the wellbeing of people who don’t look like us, don’t speak our language, or don’t have the same resources that we do?

Though Brown v Board II gave certain communities higher access to education, several problems arose after the decision was handed down, including intentionally underfunded schools in BIPOC and lower-income neighborhoods, leading to fewer opportunities for BIPOC students.
