We were thrilled to host the DCMO BOCES School Nutrition Managers () last month for a Farm Tour, as part of an Ag and Markets Farm to School Grant. The managers toured Berry Brook Farm (), Lucky Dog Farm (), and finished the day with lunch from Tiny’s () and coffee from Hamden General ().

Here are some words from Hannah, Farm to School Coordinator from the Rural Health Network ():
“One of my biggest takeaways from today is just how true of a saying it is when it comes to farm to school that it takes a village to get this work done. I’m extremely grateful for this village we have here and look forward to continuing to work together in the future.”

Catskills Agrarian Alliance had the pleasure of joining / at their Farm to School Press Conference in Albany this week to spread the word about the New York Grown Food for New York Kids Coalition. We announced that our organization distributed 13,000 pounds of food to 30 schools with a total of 40,000 students in 2025!

CAA joins the call to modernize New York’s Farm to School program in the final 2026 State Budget. Requiring no new state funding, this bipartisan proposal by and helps more schools access existing Farm to School funds to incorporate more nutritious, New York-grown food into school meals, benefiting both students and farmers.

If we want Farm to School programs to grow, schools need a bill that matches how they actually buy and serve food. That means counting ALL school meals, not just lunch, increasing reimbursement so schools can afford to participate, creating stronger incentives for districts that source above 30% from New York farms, and making sure current participants aren’t penalized as the rules change. From where we sit, these updates are practical, necessary steps that would help more schools buy local, help more farmers sell into these markets, and make the Farm to School program work the way it was intended to.

Catskills Agrarian Alliance will be standing in solidarity with the call for a General Strike tomorrow (Friday, January 30). As our always-inspiring partners at Glynwood Center for Regional Food and Farming () wrote this week, “We cannot separate food justice from justice in all its forms.”

Our hearts are with all the folks standing up and caring for their communities in Minneapolis. Much closer to home, our neighbors are fighting a proposed ICE detention facility in Chester, NY. Today (Thursday, 1/29), Rural & Migrant Ministry ()—along with Congressman Pat Ryan—will hold a press conference and rally to oppose this shameful proposal at 5:30pm at Chester Commons Park, 81 Laroe Rd. in Chester, NY.

As shared in this week’s newsletter for The 607 CSA: “We feel we have a responsibility to acknowledge the inextricable connections between the structures and systems of food production, commerce, and dehumanizing state violence.”

The CAA team will be spending Friday contacting elected officials to urge them to oppose the detention facility and to support abolishing ICE.

Here are some additional resources:

    •    Hudson Valley Justice Center () offers free legal services for low-income immigrants.
    •    For the Many () is building a grassroots movement advocating for health care, housing, racial and immigration justice, and the environment. They have helpful tools (https://forthemany.org/stop-helping-ice/) to demand that elected leaders take action against ICE.
    •    New York Immigration Coalition () has lots of great resources to help immigrants understand their rights .
    •    NYC Deportation Defense Hotline: If you see ICE, snap a picture and call or text +1 (229) 304-8720. Give as much information as possible and we will alert the neighborhood!

Some words from Amanda Wong about our partnership with Heart of Dinner (), a nonprofit that addresses food insecurity, social isolation, and loneliness among Asian American older adults living in under-resources and underinvested communities:

“The future is here and it is unevenly distributed. We are living in a dark reality where the most vulnerable communities are losing access to even their most basic human rights, especially those who are undocumented or navigating language barriers.

While this country’s racism knows no bounds, there are activists in every corner doing extraordinary mutual aid work. We have been lucky to grow food and share what we harvest with community-based organizations throughout New York, and we’re taking a moment to share those stories. We hope that uplifting this love helps bridge the distances between us.

For the past five years, we’ve been able to send Asian vegetables for the thoughtful care packages provides to homebound and underserved Asian elders. Each week, volunteers write personal notes, package over a thousand pounds of fresh produce, and provide door-to-door delivery to hundreds of recipients. With , we grow, harvest, and send scallions, Chinese broccoli, bok choy, Asian greens, and flat cabbage for Heart of Dinner’s East Harlem distributions, making sure the best vegetables from our fields reach our elders.

The compassion and care at the center of Heart of Dinner’s mission has shown us that food access work does not have to revolve around statistics or institutions. It can be about giving and receiving from the heart. We are honored to farm for their distributions, especially in a time when Asian elders increasingly lack access to culturally relevant produce in their neighborhoods as gentrification reshapes Chinatowns across New York.”

Thank you to all who joined us on the recent tour of Star Route Farm () and shared a meal that came directly through our own network of farmers in the Catskills. Everyone present that day, from farmers to mutual aid partners to institutions and funders, represents the living foodshed we are building together. Our collaboration brings us closer to a worldview in which Earth is not just an extractable resource, food is not a commodity, and partnership replaces exploitation. We are incredibly grateful for stewarding of this special gathering.
