Some words from Amanda Wong about our partnership with Heart of Dinner (), a nonprofit that addresses food insecurity, social isolation, and loneliness among Asian American older adults living in under-resources and underinvested communities:
“The future is here and it is unevenly distributed. We are living in a dark reality where the most vulnerable communities are losing access to even their most basic human rights, especially those who are undocumented or navigating language barriers.
While this country’s racism knows no bounds, there are activists in every corner doing extraordinary mutual aid work. We have been lucky to grow food and share what we harvest with community-based organizations throughout New York, and we’re taking a moment to share those stories. We hope that uplifting this love helps bridge the distances between us.
For the past five years, we’ve been able to send Asian vegetables for the thoughtful care packages provides to homebound and underserved Asian elders. Each week, volunteers write personal notes, package over a thousand pounds of fresh produce, and provide door-to-door delivery to hundreds of recipients. With , we grow, harvest, and send scallions, Chinese broccoli, bok choy, Asian greens, and flat cabbage for Heart of Dinner’s East Harlem distributions, making sure the best vegetables from our fields reach our elders.
The compassion and care at the center of Heart of Dinner’s mission has shown us that food access work does not have to revolve around statistics or institutions. It can be about giving and receiving from the heart. We are honored to farm for their distributions, especially in a time when Asian elders increasingly lack access to culturally relevant produce in their neighborhoods as gentrification reshapes Chinatowns across New York.”
