Founded November 12, 1975 in Hamburg, NY to represent the Public Safety Dispatchers that serve the Town of Hamburg and other communities, through collective bargaining. The Public Safety Dispatchers represented by Local 2478 are full-time public safety professionals, who coordinate the delivery of police, fire, and emergency medical services to the residents of the Towns of Hamburg, Boston, Colden
, and Eden, as well as the Villages of Hamburg and Blasdell. They dispatch fifteen fire departments, two ambulance squads, three police departments, a hazmat organization, and a water rescue team. Most of the dispatchers belong to these organizations, also serving their community as volunteer firefighters and EMS providers. The name "Hamburg Fire Dispatchers" was adopted at the Local's founding in 1975, when its original members were limited to that function. Since then, the dispatchers' duties have expanded to include police dispatching, telephone processing of 911 calls, and other forms of official action, consistent with their entry into the civil service system. A PSD answers and coordinates calls for service between the public and police, fire department, ambulance and other appropriate departments; receives calls on multi-line phone system regarding various emergencies; (e.g. fires, robberies, stolen vehicles, missing persons, etc.); trains new team members as required; relays calls to appropriate agencies or departments as necessary; decides priorities of service when necessary in accordance with established policies; operates multiple computer terminals simultaneously to enter and retrieve information and relay same as needed; uses state criminal justice network services to obtain needed records, and guards the welfare of prisoners held in the lockup before their arraignment.
