Hamburg Alumni Foundation

Hamburg Alumni Foundation The Hamburg Alumni Foundation This merger produced a strong, well-focused charitable organization poised to energize Hamburg in the 21st century.

The Hamburg Alumni Foundation was formed with the merger of the Hamburg Alumni Association and the Hamburg School Foundation in 2011. A Tradition of Excellence:

In September 2010 the inaugural Sports Wall of Fame ceremony was held, which inducted sixteen Alumni in an exciting, and occasionally tearful, ceremony that brought back a lot of great memories for all who attended. This program was well

overdue and we are excited for 2011 when we will expand that program to include the Distinguished Alumni award, which will be given to those Alumni who have given to their community or achieved greatest in their professional endeavor. A combined ceremony honoring these great men and women will be held in October. Supporting the Future:

The addition of synthetic turf and lights to Howe Field in 2009, spearheaded by an alumni task force, has had a tremendous impact on the Bulldog Athletic program. This addition, funded through a combination of 80% state grant and 20% local bond, has increased the use of the “football” tenfold and highlighted boys and girls in many different sports. The improvement has made Hamburg a destination for regional contests adding to district coffers and aiding local businesses. The new turf also saves the district money each year in field maintenance costs. The Hamburg Music Festival kicked-off in 2009 by a small group of Alumni as an idea to show off local talent [including student musicians] and raise money for community projects. The event has been a tremendous success and has raised, much needed, financial assistance.

It's "Wall of Fame Wednesday" and today we recognize 2016 Wall of Famer, Donald Quinn (Class of 1951). Bio was written at the time of his induction.

Don came to HHS from SS Peter and Paul grammar school. He loved it from the first day, able to use one of the greatest gifts the Lord game him, his athletic ability. He began his athletic career in 9th grade on the JV football team where he played left halfback on offense and defense. He went on to play 3 years of Varsity football, selected co-captain with Arnie Kammen his senior year. One of his fondest memories was running for a touchdown on a fake punt against East Aurora, not once, but twice, when the first one was called back. Don also spent all four years of high school on the Varsity bowling team. As a pin setter in bowling alleys from his grade school days, he was exposed to the sport at an early age. Don's biggest surprise was making the Varsity baseball team as a freshman, where he was a starter in center field. He recalled his first at-bat at Legion Field where he hit a triple. He was named outstanding athlete of the freshman class that year. Don started every game thereafter, with the team making Sectionals all four years. Another highlight was playing Sectionals at Offerman Stadium where the Buffalo Bisons played.

Don went on to Courtland State where he played football, baseball, lacrosse and was on the wrestling team. He began coaching in 1958 and has had a long career of winning records, league championships and sectional titles. He is also the recipient of numerous awards, including being named New York State Wrestling Coach of the Year on five different

It's "Wall of Fame Wednesday" and today we recognize 2012 inductee, Mick Fleming (Class of 1969). Bio was written at the time of his induction.

Mick was a three sport athlete at Hamburg, competing in Football, Basketball and Track. As a senior he was awarded the Art Howe Award and was Captain of the 1968 Hamburg football team. He was selected 1st Team All-WNY and 2nd Team All-State in Football his senior year, which was quite a feat, since back then there were only 11 players named to the All-WNY team! In basketball, Mick lettered two years and as a junior played in "The Aud" as a part of one of Hamburg's best basketball teams ever. He started on the basketball team as a senior and "rebounded" for fellow 2012 enshrine Ed Atwill. Mick was interestingly both a high jumper and a shot putter in the spring. Mick joined his brother Bob (HHS '68) at Cornell, with Mick an offensive lineman and Bob a defensive back. As a junior Mick blocked for Ed Marinaro as Cornell won the Ivy League Championship and cracked the national rankings before losing to Dartmouth on national TV. Mick went on to work in D.C. as the President of the American Chamber of Commerce Executives.
