Shopping in the downtown one can find many unique treasures and antiques. Hamburg’s downtown will be sure to bring back memories starting with Miller’s Old Fashioned 5 & 10 store, in operation since 1922. Other shops include a novelty yarn shop, a nostalgic barber shop with an antique barber chair, an herbal shop, apparel shops, and places stocked with antiques and collectibles. For a truly local flair, visit the Gallery of Hamburg, a community art gallery filled with works and handmade crafts from over 30 regional artists. In the midst of shopping, it’s easy to find traditional Pennsylvania Dutch food in a town named after Hamburg, Germany. The Hamburg Diner sports a 50’s style theme, and sandwich and pizza places throughout town are ideal to grab a quick bite to eat. For fine dining, enjoy entrees at The American House Hotel. Be sure to grab a refreshment at Adams & Bright Drugstore which houses an old fashioned soda fountain serving up classic milkshakes, soda, coffee, and ice cream. Just a few miles from town, Deitsch Eck Restaurant serves traditional PA Dutch Fare and has a small gift shop offering one of a kind treasures. Satisfy your sweet tooth by wandering into the Port Clinton Peanut Shop, an old time candy store, where one will find all the hard-to-find candies that were enjoyed years before. For entertainment, Hamburg offers some historic choices in town as well as plenty of ways to enjoy the scenic outdoors. Visitors can catch a movie at the Hamburg Strand, a one-screen theatre that dates back to 1920. Opened in 2008, Hamburg also houses the Reading Railroad Heritage Museum that features vintage railroad cars, locomotives, photographs, and artifacts from the original Reading Railroad; the museum is currently open all day Saturdays and Sundays. Visitors can opt to jump on PA Wine Trail or the Hex Barn Art Tour that passes close by the Hamburg area. The outdoors near the area are the perfect place for those who are seeking adventures, or just wanting to relax in the midst of a county park. The Pinnacle, part of the Appalachian Trail, or the Reservoir are great places to hike and Kaercher Creek is the ideal picnic spot. Bird watching, canoeing or kayaking are just a few options when taking a trip to the Schuylkill River; the Bantram Trail is ideal for horseback riding and biking. Hamburg area is surrounded by more than 12,000 acres of state forests and game lands, so it offers something for everyone to enjoy!
