Congratulations, Irina Shabetayev, on winning the 2023 Pro Bono Service Award!

Excerpt from Irina’s acceptance speech:

I’m grateful to Thomas Graham and the Russian American Bar Association of South Florida for nominating me. And for supporting my initiative and assisting with organizing, promoting and facilitating the community events to help thousands of Ukrainian refugees.

RABA unites American lawyers that speak Russian or those serving the Russian speaking clients. In 2022 our mission was to show an example of unity and compassion proving that our ethnicity, citizenship or language we speak should not stand in a way of helping people in need. Whether you are from Ukraine, Russia, Uzbekistan, or Belarus we are all members of the same community here in the US and we all stand against violence and will do whatever it takes to promote peace between our people.

As an immigrant myself I personally know how challenging and at times unbearable it feels to move to a new country adjusting to a new language, new culture, new jobs, new friends. This is especially difficult if the reason to move is not to look for a better life but to save your life fleeing the war.

I was born in a small town Bendery in one of the satellites of the former Soviet Union, Moldova. When I was 9, a war broke out in our region. Little did I know that following the military conflict I would be living in the new republic of Transnistria, still unrecognized internationally to this day. I remember as if it happened yesterday the sounds of tracing bullets by the window, us little kids sitting in the underground bomb shelters, and then our family fleeing the town crossing the bridge hoping to get to the other side. We were evacuated to Ukraine, where half of my family from my father’s side lives.

When I learned that Russia (where my mother was born, where I got my first law degree and where my best friends and half of my heart lives) invaded Ukraine I thought that’s some kind of bad dream. Immediately after the first refugees from Ukraine started coming to the United States, RABA held a series of community events. It was overwhelming, challenging but very emotional and rewarding.

On Thursday, March 31 at 10 AM, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services will virtually present information on the TPS (Temporary Protected Status), and how the process works.

Attend in-person at Gateway Center or watch the presentation live on our page. Following the presentation, volunteers from the Russian American Bar Association of Florida will be at Gateway Center until 1 pm to assist with translations and understanding the requirements of the paperwork.

There is no excuse for abuse. Domestic violence is a crime, and it must stop. Abuse is not limited to broken bones, bruises, and scars. It includes control, isolation, threats, intimidation, humiliation, deprivation of financial support and blackmailing.

Providing information to victims of domestic violence is crucial to helping them get out of abusive relationships and turning their lives around.

We would like to thank the City of Sunny Isles Beach and Commissioner Dana Goldman Dana Robin Goldman for hosting our Domestic Violence Awareness Session today!

And thank you, our distinguished speakers for sharing valuable information: Veronika Evans Veronika Viktorovna(Hollywood Police Department), Dr. Eric Reznik (Clinical & Forensic Psychology), Anastasiya Sack (Family law, and Irina Shabetayev Irina Shabetayev (Immigration law).
