A father tells his little son to draw him a picture so that he can compliment his son. The father doesn’t care for the picture so much as he wants to give his son a chance to bond and connect to him. If the neighbors kid drew a nicer drawing the father couldn’t care less. It’s about loving his son.
So too G-d tells his people, the Jewish nation to fulfill the commandments. He’s not valuing us because we perform. He values us and so he gave us something through which we can connect ourselves to Him. To go from a finite creation to unite with the Infinite creator. Every mitzva is a bridge to Him. We don’t do mitzvos so that G-d will love us, we do it because He loves us.
That’s why this week the first thing we hear about Abraham, the first Jew, is that G-d told him to go and he listened. That’s what defines our Judaism. It doesn’t have to make sense to us, because we’re doing it for a different reason. We’re doing it because He asked us to do something so that He and we can connect through this.
