Good afternoon,
The latest from the National Weather Service is that confidence remains high that the storm system currently moving across the state will bring widespread heavy rain, gusty winds, and the potential for a few tornadoes this afternoon and evening. The system is expected to intensify as it moves east. Sustained winds of 20 to 30 mph are expected across most of the Central and Eastern areas of the state with gusts of 35 to 45mph. Peak wind gusts could reach 50 MPH across the Coastal Plain. Rainfall totals are expected to range from 1.5 to 3 inches.
At 1:30 pm, radar indicated a line of storms in the Triad area moving eastward and extending from the Virginia line southward into South Carolina.
Ensure you have a way to receive NWS alerts! Monitor local media or NOAA weather radios for the latest local watches and warnings.
A Watch indicates that severe weather is possible in or near the watch area. Stay informed and be ready to act if a warning is issued.
A Warning indicates that severe weather has been indicated by radar or a spotter and presents an immediate danger to life and property.
Isolated areas of heavy rain may lead to minor river flooding with isolated flash flooding possible.
Most flood related deaths are due to driving or walking into floodwaters. Nearly half are vehicle related. You may not know the depth of the water or the condition of the road or ground underneath. This is especially true at night. If you encounter a flooded area, Turn around, don’t drown!
6 inches of fast-moving water can knock an adult off their feet.
12 inches of moving water can carry a small car.
18-24 inches of water can carry away larger vehicles including trucks, vans, and SUVs.
