After the Fire

After the Fire Provide emergency assistance to Saratoga County Residents "After The Fire". In Emergencies: We currently cover all of Saratoga County.

We are a non-profit group of volunteers that provides emergency assistance to Saratoga County Residents who have suffered loss due to fire. We are average people just like yourself, from various walks of life, who donate our time and talents to help the victims through a difficult time and assure them that they are not alone. We provide emotional support, information and referrals to resources, pe

rsonal hygiene products, and gift cards to local stores for needed items. Furthermore, in addition to immediate assistance we will also help coordinate donations of household items and furniture donated by the community. Our members respond to calls for help 24 hours a day. 7 days a week, 365 days a year. The Beginning: The organization was formed in the fall of 1991 by ladies auxiliary members from the Halfmoon/Clifton Park area. They felt that fire victims still needed help after the fire was put out and the fire trucks were gone. Knowing that most fire victims don't know where to turn, what to do next, whom to contact and where to go, they knew that there had to be a way they could help guide the victims through the process of restoring their lives to normal. We are alerted through a pager system by Fire Control dispatchers. Members closest to the scene respond to assist in any way they can. They give personal care items to the families, arrange a free night stay at a local hotel if necessary and provide information and emotional support to help them get through the traumatic experience. Usually the Red Cross is also on the scene - our services are in addition to all the The Red Cross offers! Other Activities: Our organization is completely funded by donations and fundraisers We have also been the beneficiaries of fundraisers by other organizations. We have sold candles, flower bulbs, and held various raffles. We have wrapped gifts and sold coupon books, along with many other projects. Membership Goal: As the community is becoming more aware of our services and we are being called to an increasing number of fires, we are always in need of new members willing to help out their fellow neighbor. Our short-term goal is to have an After The Fire member in every fire district in Saratoga County. In the future, we would like to start additional chapters in the Capital Region. Speakers are available; if you belong to a group, auxiliary, or organization that would be interested in working with us. Meetings: Our monthly meeting is held on the fourth Tuesday of April, May, June, and September at the Halfmoon Town Hall at 7 pm. In February, March, October and November we meet at the Eagle Matt Lee Fire Dept. in Ballston Spa, also at 7 pm. If you would like more information, or are interested in joining our organization you are welcome to attend. The only requirement to membership is a strong desire to help others. Contact: you can reach us by leaving a message on our voice mail at 518.435.4571. A member checks the messages regularly and will respond promptly. If you would like to help - Please contact us!

DID YOU KNOW?!?!?!?!

Nearly half of holiday decoration fires happen because decorations are placed too close to a heat source.

It's fun to decorate for the winter holidays, but holiday decorations can increase your risk for a home fire. As you deck the halls this season, be fire smart.
- Inspect holiday lights each year before you put them up. Throw away light strands with frayed or pinched wires.
- Water your Christmas tree every day. A dry tree is dangerous because it can catch on fire easily.
- Consider using battery-operated flameless candles, which can look, smell, and feel like real candles.
- If you do use lit candles, make sure they are in stable holders and place them away from combustible items, where they cannot be knocked down easily.
