🎬 Join us for our May AAUW meeting featuring special guest speaker Amy Reid — AAUW Fund scholarship recipient, artist, filmmaker, and Ph.D. candidate at UC Santa Cruz.

Amy’s work explores gender, national identity, and labor through feature-length films, video installations, and writing. Her current dissertation, Feminist Relationality in the Americas: Women’s Practices in Filmmaking & Quilting, examines feminist filmmakers of the 1970s and connects their work to her own experiences as a filmmaker and film programmer.

She holds a BFA from The Cooper Union, an MFA from UC San Diego, and is also an alumna of the Whitney Independent Study Program.

Days for Girls Update from AAUW HMB member Lucinda Hirahoka in Peru 🇵🇪

DFG kits were distributed to girls and mothers on March 5 in Peru, South America. There were more than 90 people between girls, mothers, and teachers attending the presentation. Eighty DFG kits were distributed. The activity was a success. The girls really appreciated the educational component and they were very grateful for the kits.

The organization in Peru that helped coordinate this effort was Kantaya Casita 3 Santa Rosa. Kantaya Casita is an after-school "Casita Feliz" (Happy House) in Peru. It is a non-profit organization that serves vulnerable children in the Santa Rosa area by providing quality education, emotional support, and activities like, arts, reading, and nutrition to help them achieve their dreams.

AAUW Half Moon Bay member Wendy Lama recently distributed 50 sustainable Days for Girls menstruation kits to young girls near Kandy, Sri Lanka. On February 19, 2026, Shammi Dharamwickrama, a Days for Girls teaching ambassador, also led a Women’s Health course in Tamil—one of Sri Lanka’s official languages—to help promote menstrual health awareness and education in the community.

Coastside Gives - May 7, 2026

As members, we are all aware of our mission and goals, especially our commitment to uplifting girls and women through education via Tech Trek, Scholarships, Mentoring, and AAUW Funds for fellowships.

The "how" of our work depends on the generosity of donors to events like the Theatre Bash, Holidays at the Johnston House, and Coastside Gives. It is in this spirit of donating that we are pleased to announce that Coastside Gives 2026 will take place on Thursday, May 7th. Our theme for this year will be “Uplifting girls and women through education.”

Important things to know:
â—Ź 2026 Goal=$12,000
â—Ź Even a small donation makes a big difference in reaching our goal
â—Ź This is our biggest fundraiser of the year
â—Ź May 7th is the BIG DAY for giving (the website opens for early giving on April 1st)
● Stay tuned for lots of “uplifting” updates

What an inspiring visit with local core agency, Coastside Hope, for our AAUW Half Moon Bay CA Branch last night! It was an inspiration to learn about the wide variety of basic services over 7,000 Coastsiders receive from them each year, from food support to assistance in registering for MediCal and everything in between.
