How has CCO invited young people to explore classical music over the years? (Clockwise from top) Two exciting demos: "For the Love of Music" assembly at Boys & Girls Club for all 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students on the Coastside, plus our participation in a panel at BBE Film Festival, both in collaboration with Beach Break Entertainment! CCO has also repaired or replaced student instruments, such as this tuba for the Cunha Band; invited advanced teen musicians to join the orchestra for a semester; and we perform for classrooms and small groups, providing kids an up-close experience with orchestral instruments. https://www.coastsidegives.org/organization/cco

Our Spring concert is almost here! We close out our 43rd season this Saturday, April 11 at 7:30pm at the IDES Hall in downtown Half Moon Bay. Come and enjoy Aaron Copland's Suite from Appalachian Spring, as well as Ludwig van Beethoven's amazing Symphony #5.

It is difficult to imagine how Beethoven could write this symphony and so many other works with the depth, intensity and emotion that characterize his music. After all, he was only in his mid-30s when he wrote "the fifth" and was already struggling with deafness. The Symphony reveals its serious and very recognizable theme from its first four notes. But don't despair, listeners; you will also hear quite a bit of joy and celebration throughout this iconic and familiar work.

Here's a peek into a rehearsal for our upcoming concert, an excerpt from Aaron Copland's "Appalachian Spring" orchestral suite. Join us to hear the entire work on Saturday, April 11 at 7:30 pm at the beautiful IDES Hall in HMB.

In 1944, Copland finished composing the music for the Martha Graham Dance Company's "Appalachian Spring" after many production changes and wartime delays. The ballet is the story of a rural community at the turn of the 19th century who join in to celebrate the wedding and beginning of a young couple's life together. The immensely popular and successful work highlighted Copland's "Americana" musical style, and earned him the Pulitzer Prize for Music in 1945.
